I am about 6 hours post op and I feel physically hungry. Is this normal?

A lot of people talk about head hunger, which I am just starting to recognise now (I am 10 weeks post op). I didn't feel any "hunger" or similar physical feeling for a long time, but I do feel empty in the morning. It is really hard to explain.

Sorry I can't say anything to help here. If you are feeling hungry have you tried small sips of Water? I remember being told that often hunger is actually thirst, but your brain doesn't recognise it from years of bad habits. Just a thought.

Good luck with recovery, I am sure you'll do well 🙂

Others on this board have mentioned that having high stomach acid can make you feel like you are hungry.

Apparently, for you it is.

Something consider is you've been on a pretty severe pre-op liquid diet. You've basically been starving yourself for a couple weeks. Yesterday and today you may have had nothing. So hunger is reasonable response.

Many people don't feel hungry because of their reaction to surgery and anesthesia and all the other stuff that can affect their response. Yours is a rational hunger.

I would view this as a good sign that your going to have a good recovery because, again apparently, you are experiencing little inflammation. Good news.

Follow your program, learn your new functionality. Do you.

Good luck.

I had my surgery on 3/1 and thought I was hungry but it has been suggested that I'm actually experiencing cramps, spasms, or nausea. Since I'm not used to feeling turmoil in my stomach that I haven't tried to solve with food, I'm confusing the sensation with hunger/tummy growling. I'm working on rewiring my brain to remember discomfort probably isn't hunger. It's so weird!

I was hungry after my surgery (2/8). And hella thirsty. I ate/ drank more in the hospital than I did when I got home. Then my gas pain was getting the best for me and pain overruled hunger. For me it's really been up and down. I have (relatively few) hungry moments. I have also had some cravings in the beginning that I'm pretty much over now. I'm finding that I actually feel less hungry everyday which actually sucks because I want to increase my calories.

I def know that feeling! I'm assuming everyone feels empty in the morning. That's why we run to our scales! 😀

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
