Hi,

I was just banded on Monday. I am doing great, the port incision and the incision at my sternum are the most sore. Just have "some" bruising. I was just wondering if anyone out there who has just had the surgery has had any "tightening" sensions at the sternum. Don't know what that is, but it is kinda worrying me! Just feels wierd...:)

Hi daynaloo and welcome!! Congrats on getting your band! I was banded last Friday (11/30) and had lots of pain at the port site.

If you are concerned abt the sternum pain, I'd call your doc just to ease your fears. Pretty much pain all over is what I felt at first but it's so much better now.

I have an after surgery ???

I live alone and am very independant. Will I be o.k. by myself after surgery? I haven't planned on having anyone staying here with me.

Smallerme, I had a similar situation. I live alone and chose not to tell friends or family about my surgery. The clinic where I was banded, however, insisted I have someone pick me up after the surgery was over and stay with me for 24 hours. It was to cover their legal liability in case something happened to me after I got home. The clinic gave me the number of a nursing service where you can hire a nurse or home care provider on a temporary basis. If your clinic/hospital insists on the same requirement you might want to ask them if they can recommend a nursing service. Or perhaps you can find something in the yellow pages.

Initial Consult: November 8, 2007

I live alone too, and my parents are going to stay in NY a month after Christmas to be with me during and after the surgery. I am so thankful to them for that, because there was no way I could go through the surgery and the week after alone. I have never spent more than a few hours in an ER, so staying overnight in a hospital actually scares me. Mind you, I am from a large family, but they are all married with families of their own and I couldn't impose on them for this.

I wish I could give you some advice on your situation, and I give you lots of props to go this alone.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
