My surgery is tomorrow. I have to be at the hospital at 6 am and of course we are expecting a winter storm tonight! Anyway, I’m kind of freaking out. I’m really scared about the spinal block I’m going to get. I’m also not looking forward to spending the night at the hospital. And.... I’m scared about all the life changes that are to come. Although, I know that I am making the right decision. I’m just starting to freak out.

Good luck to you Jnfinney! I'm sure the nerves are all over the place. I'm a few days behind you and I'll be feeling similar most likely. Deep breaths and try to remember why you've gone through all the steps so far. Happy thoughts for a calm & quick day tomorrow for you.

Are you sure you're getting a spinal block? That sounds very unusual. Not saying it's impossible, just from a technical standpoint, it seems like an odd choice. Could you tell us more about this when you're able?

Yes, they called it a spinal. They said I will get a local anesthetic, then they will put the block in my spine. They said it will help with pain management which ultimately will help with nausea.

That is fascinating. Have you had an upper GI to check for hiatal hernia? I was just thinking how inconvenient it would be to run into one of those with a patient who wasn't intubated.

I had a sleeve, fortunately for me I didn't suffer with any nausea. Thankfully I had a rather boring recovery, no gas pain, no nausea, no acid reflux...I did have some spasms when first drinking Fluid but this didn't last long at long and there was discomfort around the incision sites but no pain as such. Contact dermatitis was probably the worse of any thing I experienced.

Presumably they do with all their patients? And have excellent results with recovery?

No I did not. I was told several times that I’m very healthy 👍🏻

Yes this is something my surgeon does with all his patients to help with recovery. So far I just feel really weak and tired and I have some pain in my chest, like in my diaphragm area.

@Hop_Scotch I am every day dreaming of a “boring recovery” LOL!!!!! It helps to manage my anxiety to know that although some people do have problems, that there are cases like yours! 🤞🏼🤞🏼
Was your contact dermatitis from the glue or adhesive on your incision sites? What side effects did you have - just itching? What were you able to do to manage it?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
