Help!! Nerves are kicking in!

Recommended Posts

Hello friends.

My name is Mark, 35 years old and am two weeks out from surgery. I’m really at peace with my decision to get WLS. I know it’s going to suck for a while but it will hopefully all be worth it.

I’m not nervous about the procedure or what’s going to happen after I’m truly nervous because I’ve never been “skinny” or even remotely close. I was always the chubby kid ever since I can remember. I was the fat friend. Now, I’m two weeks out and know that if all goes well, I’ll be healthy.

Anyone else have this same fear/anxiety? If so how do you cope with that and everyone now complementing you for your weight.

Thanks all!

Mark

first, unfortunately, there are far more patients who never make it to goal than there are those who become "too skinny". In fact, research has shown that only 10-15% of patients make it to a normal BMI, let alone skinny.

secondly, you do have control over this. If you find yourself losing too much weight, you can always increase your calories.

Hi Mark! Congrats on your surgery! There is a post here about other benefits to weight loss surgery besides weight loss that I think you should read through. It might help your anxiety about being smaller.

One of the only negative things I see in this forums is changed relationships with friends and family. If you have the support you need, I see only great things in your future!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
