Soft Food Stage

Hey all .. I see some familiar names in here! Please disregard this post if you see it on another fourm

I am 6 weeks out and I have some questions on food phases. I was advised to stay on full liquids for 3 weeks, which I did pretty much without a hitch (hard to believe, but I did it.) Now I'm halfway through my soft foods stage .. I haven't been perfect, but I am doing very well with Carnation Instant Breakfast, scrambled eggs, SF yogurt, tuna, baked fish, etc. I am getting in all of my Protein and most of my Water.

My question's this. I don't have a problem eating soft foods for the remaining two weeks, but I am not really losing weight either. In fact, I gained 2.5 lb back when I got on soft foods (I have since realized where I was making my mistakes and tweaked my intake). I have the determination to follow my doctors' advice, but they are very extremely pro-RNY and I feel that my dietary instructions may be more for RNY patients. In fact, the guidelines they provided have a heading that reads "Dietary Requirements for Gastric Bypass." I complained about that, but we will see if they fix it.

I have been waiting 30 minutes after eating to drink my Water. Is that long enough? Also, could/should I be introducing more solid food to my diet, at 6 weeks out, so that I can maximize my restriction? I don't want to harm anything. Nobody at my doctors' office seems to make any distinction between RNY and Band procedures. I don't think they are making the effort. I didn't get the Inamed booklet or anything Band-related from them.

Any advice would be appreciated.

i was told not to drink 2 hours after eating and 30 minutes before.... and this is how their diet plan works...

1-3 days Clear Liquids

3-14 days liquids- things you can suck through a straw...soups, cottage cheese, pudding, Jello and even mashed taters.

14-28 days mushy foods- soft fish, chicken, etc

week 5 regular diet...

if anything irratates you tummy.. go back to liquids for a few days.

i hope this helps

good luck

2 hours seems to be a little to long to not drink Shelly...

I normally drink about 1 hour after my meal....

i am not even at that point yet! i was just giving the info from my Post op Menu. i think it will def. be hard for me to do. but the dietician explained that it washes your food down and makes you hungry faster. being less than 2 weeks out thats all i am having is liquids!! it seems like it would be hard to get all of the Water in.

how long does it take before you are hungry leo?

are you on soft foods or solid foods? my dietician also says to avoid soft foods after healing stage is over because they dont last as long!

my head wants me to eat more than my tiny portions size!!!! i have to wash my container and get busy to not *want* to eat! i will get used to it!

Michelle, I am having this problem, big time. In fact, our office just had a party with lots of Snacks and though I didn't eat as much as I would have 6 weeks ago, I did eat some and now I am feeling chest pressure. It all just tastes so good! :D how do you stop?

My first fill is on the 8th...

shellyj .. that's funny because my tall and slender mother used to always tell me to taste whatever I wanted and spit it out .. it was her "secret" .. now she's thrilled that I am taking her advice! (It took the Band to convince me it was a good idea (: .. )

Too funny

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
