Taste changes for the worst!

Recommended Posts

I am 5 weeks post op and from day 1 my taste buds have completely changed. EVERYTHING and i mean everything smells and tastes horrible. I am currently on soft foods but still my favorite foods that i am able to eat have no taste or have a bad taste to them and I am extremely sensitive to all smells .. Will this pass? Am I doomed to never enjoy any foods again because other than fruit and toast, nothing tastes good. It's like my taste buds have completely changed for the worst...😩

Yes it will pass. It’s one of those quirky temporary side effects. Just sounds like it’s more severe for you. ☹️

My sense of smell wasn’t affected only my taste buds. And sometimes textures were strange.

Congrats on your surgery. Hope everything is going well for you.

I'm sorry your going through that. I'm 6wks out. I have no problem with smell. My taste buds are funny. I can eat somethings but it doesn't taste like what it smells like. If u know what I mean. pizza & hot dogs are to salty. Right now I'm just sticking to oatmeal, Protein drinks, fish & sometimes a little steak (&that's a small piece) I can tolerate salads & chicken the only thing about that is that I can't eat my own food... someone else has to cook it for me to eat it.

It should pass.. I went through this also and it was terrible! It was really hard to get my Protein in at first because the shakes tasted disgusting. I had to force myself to drink them. A lot of my other favorites tasted weird.. Cottage cheese was weird. Now I'm 8 months out and for the most part things taste like they did before, and I can even drink Premier Protein again.
I do notice that I'm more sensitive to the taste of salt though. I've always been a saltaholic and not much tasted salty to me but now it does. That's a good thing I guess. Ha ha
I'm sorry you're dealing with this but it will pass!

I was really bad for the first month. I couldn't even drink Water without feeling sick. The only thing I could tolerate was peppermint tea. I had to get a script from the doc for nausea. Maybe you can ask your doc about it. It does help. My sensitivity to smell was the worst. Every time my hubby would cook something, I had to go outside because I felt so sick. By the second month I could eat cream of wheat, and a little bit of oatmeal. It got a little better for me each month.

I so agree with you!! There are very little foods I am able to eat an keep down. I can't do Protein drinks/powders anymore, the smell of some food or the sight of it makes me sick. I just don't know how else to get protein in. I'm really struggling. I have tried the "unflavored" Protein Powder and can't do that either.

I hate that you're going through this but I feel better knowing others have had the same issue! Nothing tastes good anymore except maybe cheese. I'm about 7 weeks out from surgery and am really hoping this goes away. I get so excited to try something other than broth or a shake but it never makes it past a couple of bites. I feel like the Vitamins also always leave a weird taste in my mouth.

I am in the same situation. I am only 15 days post op and smell and taste are awful. I can’t even drink a Protein Shake, I just can take a sip here and there. I just started soft food nothing looks , smells or tastes good. Today the only thing I could tolerate was Jello, I tried a scramble egg, cottage cheese, chicken thigh, white of hard boiled egg....everything awful, I have the fusion Vitamins, they leave the most awful taste in my mouth, I am constantly brushing my teeth. To make matters worse I have burning mouth syndrome which also really affects taste and smell. God please just get me through this part. I feel like I want a lump crab cake or a taste of pizza but I know they will fail like everything else and I know I can’t have pizza. How long does this take to subside.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
