What foods do you have to avoid with the Lapband?

Recommended Posts

I read that there are certain foods you cannot eat such as certain vegetables. I was wondering what foods are you no longer able to eat. Steak? chicken? Broccoli?

I think it really depends on you and the amount of fill in your band, but I had a hard time with certain meats, eggs, toasty breads, and fibrous fruits (oranges, pineapple, etc). Because of complications with the band, I had a revision last week to the sleeve.

I have a band and struggle with potatoes--they become like glue and get stuck. (Not that I should be eating it) A McDonald's hashbrowns or french fries will be painful for me. Also eating bread could sometimes be a problem for me, sometimes not. I don't do well with reheated chicken or shrimp--they become tough and hard to chew small enough. I never touch celery with strings, and once a piece of raw broccoli sent me to the ER, so CHEW CHEW CHEW!!!

I lost 95 lbs with my band. I felt incredible! Then they unfilled me when I got pregnant, and I never was able to get back to my sweet spot. Gained all back plus due to bad habits, slider foods, sugar addiction, stress, and then lockdown boredom eating. I too am getting a revision to VGS in 3 weeks.

Just remembered another: sometimes seaweed on sushi gets stuck--probably because I didn't chew it enough? I had a TERRIBLE time with puking it back up once. The stickiness of the rice turns to glue with the moist seaweed. Avoid if possible. Maybe go for sashimi instead if you really are dying for it.

I’ve had trouble eating chicken, steak, shrimp, hot dogs, some leaf veggies and raw vegetables like carrots. I have a hard time chewing it well enough to digest.

I do have to peel sushi and leave the seaweed behind. Pasta does not like my band. 15 years of banded life (with a low fill). It did change my life. I am thankful.

I had eggs and I felt sick for two days. I think I tried them too soon after surgery. I will try them again in a couple of weeks and see how it goes.

For me, really just raw or cooked broccoli and kale. I can eat almost anything else.

Brussel Sprouts. The veggie from hell for lap banders!! If anything will give me an problem, it is a Brussel sprout! But I'v found that there is no food that gives me problems so long as I chew it thoroughly and eat slowly. Everything else has been fine, but my band is not as tight as it could be adjusted to.

My biggest issue is eating slowly. While i am trying to use 30 minutes to eat - I am usually done in 7 minutes! URGH!!

The lap band prevents me from eating healthy foods like fruits, veggies, and lean Proteins. It does NOTHING to stop me from eating slider foods, though, so I've actually gained weight with the lap band. I regret not doing bypass in the first place but I thought the lap band would be a safer choice since nothing was cut or removed. I was wrong. People have complications/issues with the band WAY more than with any other WLS, and far less success. I know some folks on here have had success with it but they're in the minority. Most doctors aren't even doing lap bands anymore. My doctor said he takes out way more bands now than ever before because they were popular 10 years ago but are failing. I'm converting to bypass soon... can't wait to get my surgery date!

after 10 years I still avoid a lot of breads, pizza, French fries, any dry meat I only eat ribeye steak , hamburger tends to be difficult again has to be a good cut of meat. sometimes its the combination of foods like I have to be careful with meat and mashed potatoes. or a tomatoes sandwich with mayo something about the consistency doesn't work. watermelon can also be tricky i can have it but nothing else with it.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
