Studio54 27 Posted February 28, 2021 This is my very first post! I had RNY / hiatal hernia surgery for severe reflux due to my BMI. Gastric bypass was never my first choice but I figured it would be a win-win. Fix the reflux and lose weight! My surgery was February 24, 2021. Today is postop day four. I was down to 278 before surgery. Today I am 283!!!! I am in shock that eating 400 cal a day, 60 g of Protein (and I’ve been able to drink about 50 ounces of Water every day!) I still haven’t lost weight - in fact it’s gone up. I was in the hospital for two days because of severe pain and had a lot of IV fluids so this could be it but I don’t feel swollen? Did this happen to anybody immediately postop? 😬
mweiss1998 79 Posted February 28, 2021 I gained 11 lbs in the hospital. It's just air and fluids. Give it time. 4 Studio54, Creekimp13, Arabesque and 1 other reacted to this
BigSue 1,395 Posted February 28, 2021 Yes, that is extremely common. They pump you full of IV fluids in the hospital, so it's normal and expected to temporarily gain weight from that. Right now, it is too early to worry about your weight at all. The scale is meaningless at this point. You just need to focus on getting your fluids and Protein for now. 3 catwoman7, Studio54 and Arabesque reacted to this
Elidh 241 Posted February 28, 2021 STEP AWAY FROM THE scale for at least 2 weeks post-op! The iv fluids, swelling etc. will mess with your mind! 3 Studio54, Creekimp13 and catwoman7 reacted to this
Crick 146 Posted March 1, 2021 I gained 10 lbs after surgery. It was gone after a week (along with some other weight), but it could take as long as two weeks. Don’t stress about it - it’s perfectly normal and it will go away shortly. 1 Studio54 reacted to this

luluplus6 0 Posted March 1, 2021 Just had my Gastric Bypass on February 23, 2021 and also gained left the hospital 10 lbs. heavier. Some people can hide the Fluid retention better than others. My legs, ankles and feet were very swollen. On the 27th, I finally started losing the excess fluid. It takes a few days but it does start to come off. Best wishes for you on this journey! punte 8 Posted March 1, 2021 i was just like you I came out of hospital 4 lbs heavier and was horrified!! not only that but it was not shifting at all for the first week,i was convinced there was some thing wrong .I am happy to let you know that I had my surgery 11-2 21 and I am now 18 days post op , 12 lbs down. I know everybody says dont stand on the scale but after you have taken the big step to have the surgery its only natural to want to see the results .I have become addicted to standing on the scale every day and am now seeing it go down daily which is great.I hear a lot of people on the forum say they had a stall at week 3 so at least i am prepared that if i see this it is nothing to worry about. You have taken the brave step to have the surgery and the weight WILL come off dont wory .I am like you I take 400 calories a day ,70 gr Protein and 2 litres and its working . Good luck on your weight loss journey Mary
Hop_Scotch 1,633 Posted March 1, 2021 I wish (more) surgeons would highlight the impacts of iv fluids, inflammation etc on the body after surgery, it certainly would save a lot of worrying and confusion, 1 WishMeSmaller reacted to this

Did this happen to anybody immediately postop? 😬 I don't know if it happened or not, I didn't weigh myself for the first 3 weeks after I left the hospital - you need to be focusing on Protein, Vitamins, fluids - Water. I know I know you want to have lost weight - seems like you should have, but yes pumped full of fluids and you don't need to feel bloated to be retaining lots of water. Also, I'm pretty sure no bowel movements yet either? As other people have said it and I know easier said then done, get away from the scale. Also I suggest picking a day to weigh - for me I weigh every Tuesday because that was my surgery date. If I happen to step on a scale any other day then that day, I don't freak out if I am up or Celebrate if I am down, those weights don't count. Also if you've looked at other posts on the forums, after about week 6-8 a stall that happens for most people. Or sometimes it's only .2 losses for a moment and that freaks people out too. 1 Studio54 reacted to this
