Reactive Hypoglycemia

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I am 18 months post gastric bypass. The experience has been great and I have not had any complications. My biggest issue is reactive hypoglycemia. When I eat too much sugar and/or carbs, my blood sugar tanks about an hour after. Does anyone else struggle with this? Any tips or tricks to better manage? I know it is completely diet related.

yes. I don't think it's all that uncommon with bypassers once we're a couple years out (not common - but not UNcommon, either). I have to eat every 3-4 hours and if I eat a carb, I have to eat a Protein with it. I rarely have problems with it since I started doing that. (well, and more importantly, I watch my sugar intake, too. I can eat some, but not a ton)

I'm actually on medication for mine as I cannot control it with diet. However, they have suggested to me a very low carb/low sugar diet. I have found that I cannot eat most fruit, but I have to eat 1/4 of a banana a couple of times a week for muscle cramps. I eat Protein first, (non-starchy) vegetables second, and if I'm still hungry eat the carb. Small meals 6 times a day and a bedtime snack. I also have a freestyle libre which helps identify my lows and trends. Being able to visualize on the meter has really impacted what I eat and has helped very much! I love that thing!

I am trying to control my with diet. My low yesterday was 48. Today I am running at 180 and not sure what do do about that. I ate super healthy all week and yesterday had a latte that dropped me in 2 hours after drinking it.

So...I'm 3 months post op sleeve surgery and about a month ago started having dizziness issues whenever I stand up from a seated position. Yesterday, after a boxing class at noon, I was pretty much dizzy for the rest of the day. My vision also seems to have gotten blurry to a small degree. My surgeon has been no help, she just said that's not normal. My primary care physician ran a bunch of tests (bloodwork, blood pressure, etc.), they all came back normal. Could this be hypoglycemia? I have continuous blood glucose monitors from before surgery (not because I was diabetic - I signed up for a diet service pre-surgery called nutrisensio that provided them along with an app). Maybe I should monitor my glucose levels for a while and see what happens?

It wouldn't hurt to monitor your levels!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
