3 weeks post op - The good and the bad

Recommended Posts

Hello

It’s been 3 weeks since my gastric sleeve. I am on soft foods now. I have eaten a whole egg with some cheese to soften it no problem, I’ve tried having a healthy version of Nutella when I felt dizzy - no problem no dumping. bread feels uncomfortable and heavy in my stomach. Other than I have no problem with foods and eating. I do feel thirsty sometimes and have the urge to chug ice coldwater , of course I haven’t. Any tips on keeping thirst at bay? How many “sips” can you have at once 3 weeks post op?

The only downside is I feel dizzy if I’m squatting or standing up. Even though I have been cleared for exercise and I’m so eager to start to help avoid sagging, the dizziness is scaring me.. I don’t want to faint.

PS: I tried the ricotta bake.. it was good but too oily and rich for me.

that dizziness seems to be common early out - I've seen several posts about it. I've read it's often due to lower blood pressure. You're supposed to just transition slowly (e.g., from sitting to standing). It seems to be a temporary issue.

I never had issues with drinking - I didn't chug, but I never had to sip fluids really slowly, either.

I'm 23 days post sleeve and still on pureed. Basically all I eat are eggs, oatmeal, tuna salad, and oikos triple zero yogurt. I cannot wait to get on soft foods in a week. As far as Water, right now I can have 3 sips at a time and drink 3-4 bottles of water or protein2o, no chugs though. Like you, I do feel dizzy at times when getting up or turning a corner, but not bad enough to feel like I'll faint. I kind of just pause for a moment. I have a lot of energy and feel great and am looking forward to going to the gym next week. My biggest issues right now are lack of bowel movement, skin dryness, and a crazy headache (think its PMS related though). What are you eating in the soft foods stage?

YMMV, but some time nearing the end of the first month post-op (I can't remember exactly when) but I woke up one day and found I was suddenly able to chug Water. Been chugging ever since.

Prior to that, I had a timer set on my watch to remind me to sip 1 lf oz of water every 15 mins while I was awake.

I was pretty dizzy the first couple months as well (like catwoman7 said it was due to low blood pressure for me). I had a handful of almost blackouts. By month 3 it got much better. By month 6-7 they were gone (which coincided with the time I stopped weight loss phase).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
