1st weigh in @ 1st appt (clothes or gown)

Recommended Posts

I was wondering how everyone did their initial weight in (clothed or gown)? I think I will need the extra few pounds of clothes & shoes to qualify.

What was your experience?

Clothes and no shoes (they provide a scale foot cover) . I always try to wear close to the same amount of clothes during my weigh ins. I can play really bad mind games with myself and I just want to keep it honest. Even in my past when my weight was 116 pounds, I played games with the scale so my relationship with it can be very unhealthy.

I joked with my husband that if I lost too much weight to qualify for insurance I was going to buy a padded bra, remove the padding, and put those 5 lb wrist weight things in each cup. I managed to skate in right above the line, no weight manipulation needed.

Your surgeons office is very unlikely to make you strip for your weigh-in. The scale is in a public place and I doubt they want that!

That's funny, but I'm in the same boat. I weigh enough with my shoes & jacket on...but a few pounds short without items.

They did mine fully clothed shoes off... but then they subtracted a bit for clothing lol. I was on the cusp of qualifying... so honestly I hate a lot of food the week prior so I would be a little more bloated. I also knew I had to be able to prove that I lost some weight pre-op so I wanted to be up just enough to qualify and lose a couple pounds to stay qualified. The thing is.. if I tried, I could lose weight... but no matter what I did it wouldn't STAY OFF... so I knew I needed to do surgery at that point since nothing else worked even under physician guidance and prescribed weight loss treatments.

Thanks everyone for replying! I had my 1st weigh in & was fully clothed w/ shoes on. I just made 40bmi but have 6 months of diet plans & weigh ins ahead. My insurance is Arizona Complete Health (medicaid in AZ) & requires 6 months diet plan w/ Primary doc, Cardiologist (EKG), Pulmonologist (chest x-ray), sleep study, nutritionist, psych eval, endoscopy, & letter of rec from primary care doc. It is a lot, but you got to do what you got to do!

If anybody has suggestions for me or doc recommendations, please let me know!

Where are you in AZ? Near Tucson? And if you ARE near Tucson, who is your Bariatric doc and which hospital are they associated with? I might be able to help!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
