Whey protein vs collagen protein

Recommended Posts

I’ve been going over my pre-surgery information (gastric bypass). It specifies that the Protein I need to take after surgery has to be whey protein. Does anybody know why or have any experience with this? I’ve done some online searching and collagen protein seems better
Thanks, Breanne

whey Protein isolate is more easily absorbed by us than other types, so that's what's recommended, at least early out when you're not getting much protein from food. Once you're getting most if not all of your protein from food, other types of protein are OK (and a lot of people don't even continue with Protein Shakes once they're far enough out to get their protein needs met through food).

Keep in mind that our altered digestive systems aren't the same anymore as a normal person's, so some things that might apply to most people won't necessarily apply to us.

How lucky, I just tried to figure this out yesterday, too. @catwoman7 is right! Once you're comfortably making sure you're getting your Protein, don't be afraid to add some collagen protein, too.

Whey Protein is a complete protein. collagen protein is not. A complete protein is one source that provides all of the nine essential amino acids in adequate amounts. Collagen Protein is Incredible. But it is NOT Complete. Collagen, however, is a unique type of protein. It is not complete, meaning, it does not have all 9 essential amino acids that a complete protein requires.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
