Hi everyone! I wanted to know what everyone did during their workout routine when you first started after surgery. I'm 7 months PO looking to get my strength back and build muscle as well. What did you all do in a routine (sets & reps)?

supplements included?

Just wondering did your Doc want you to wait this long to get back in the gym? I am hoping to be able to start lifting again a couple months after surgery. My wife asked me to quit lifting a year ago as she said it was only making me bigger and not losing in the areas I needed to. She was right by the way but I am glad I have that muscle under this fat! Looking forward to lifting again. I am 63 but was doing 225# sets on the bench and other lower weight sets. I also like the seated leg press and doing 3 sets of 25 at 550# or so. I did all the other machines too but those and the dumbells are my favorite. I don't want to put too much stress on my core so I am going to ask my surgeon when is the right time to start. Good luck to you on your journey.

No, my dr didn't tell to wait this long. I was cleared to start weight lifting about a month after my surgery. But during the pandemic, I wasn't able to get back in the gym right away. So, I had to use resistance bands and some small dumbbells that I had along with some YouTube videos. But now since I'm consistently able to go to a gym, I'm trying to find a workout routine that will maximize my results. Whether I'm supposed to be focusing on building muscle and building strength with a lower rep range or focus on a higher rep range.

I am not very good with knowing what types of exercises to do or how many reps and sets, so I discovered Melissa Le Man and her boyfriend Brandon Michael, who are both professionals in the world of weight lifting and bodybuilding. They both offer workout programs and personalized nutrition programs. The cost will vary depending on what you want. I paid $67 for a one time program that never expires from Melissa Le Man. I know you can pay more for more customized programs. They both offer at home workout programs and programs for at the gym that are downloaded on your phone or tablet. I loved my program from Melissa Le Man, so I highly recommend it!

They can offer a nutrition plan for bariatric patients?

@Staggs I’m not 100% sure on that, but I know they do offer coaching programs that include customized nutrition. So my assumption is that they would be able to work around the needs of a bariatric patient as well.

I joined a crossfit gym and it has been amazing for me. They tell you what to do so it takes all the thinking out of it. It includes all types of fitness. From cardio, to lifting, and gymnastics. I love what it has done for my body,

First off, kudos to you for wanting to regain your strength and build muscle post-surgery. It's important to start slow and progressively work your way up. Since you're 7 months post-op, you've likely received guidance from your healthcare provider, but here's a general idea:

Start with low weights or resistance bands to ease into it. Focus on full-body workouts to maintain balance. Try 3 sets of 10-15 reps for each exercise, gradually increasing weights and reps as you get stronger.

As for recovery and support, you might want to check out Tuffwraps.com for gear like wrist wraps and lifting belts, which can provide added stability and safety during your workouts.

Remember, patience is key, and always listen to your body. You're on the right track, and with consistency and determination, you'll see those strength and muscle gains.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
