Does soup count as a liquid?

Recommended Posts

I’ve been told that we’re not supposed to drink within 30 minutes before or after a meal after surgery to help prevent accidental overeating and digestion problems. Does Soup count as drinking? Like can you have a broth-based soup as a meal or would that cause problems? I know it counts as a liquid for the liquid diet so I assume it’s best to stay away but I’ve never heard anyone mention anything about it afterwards

Soup is fine. They don't want you drinking while you're eating because it can stretch your stomach, and the Fluid takes up valuable space. You'll fill up quickly if you drink while eating.

I was told not to count soup as a "water". I was told to eat soup as a meal. It doesn't make any sense, since the broth of the soup is like drinking a liquid. Everyone's plans are so different, so I would check with your doctor.

Yep, you can count all liquids. Well that’s what I was told.

If I drink & eat at the same time or drink & eat too closely together my restriction kicks in really quickly & then I can’t get my nutrients in. I found chunky Soups difficult for the first 5 or so months for the same reason - liquids combined with solids filling me too quickly - so I puréed my soups or cooked them for ages & they were pretty soft & mushy. Not as much of an issue 21 months out. If you can only consume 1/2 cup of liquid or 1/2 cup of food at a time you will only be able to have 1/2 cup of food & liquid combined.

You may find you can reduce the time between eating & drinking in time.

Thanks for the information. I’ll ask my doctor but it seems like I’ll have to see how my body handles it. I’m not a big Soup person anyway but the thought came up so I wanted to ask lol. Thanks!

I only eat Progresso light Soups. I take all the Pasta out of the meatball one, and add green Beans, and chickpeas (for more protein). The only other one I eat is the chicken pot pie one, and add to it also. I eat soup 2 x's a week for dinner.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
