So...what's up with SALAD?

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I desperatly miss salads. I love leafy greens and the crunch.

I read and hear that lettuce is a no no... but for how long?

Then I hear some people are eating salads... what's up?

What happens when you eat lettuce? does it block the stoma? why are we not supposed to eat it?

Please advise on your experience with Lettuce. Thanks:help:

LOL, Wasa!

I can eat salad, as long as I'm careful. So far, though, I haven't had it shoot out through my nose, ala salad shooter.... EWWW!

Caution is strongly recommended when eating salad.

THAT was the funniest (LOL for real) thread I've read so far.

Thanks for the link.

I have had no PB'ing or barfing yet. I got STUCK once with a pill because i didn't sip enough Water with it. that took 2 hours to pass.

So... NO on the lettuce and the rice is what i've been hearing...

Thanks

You are still very new to banding and lettuce can be a problem until you heal totally. I love salad too and I had problems at first. I chop everything up real small before I even attemp to eat it. Another thing I do is put the crunchy veggies, like cerery, cukes, peppers and onion through a few pulses in the food processor. Then I mix with lettuce and dressing and cut it all up again.

Everybody is so different as to what they can tolerate and you will not know until you try. Just proceed with caution on any new food you are introducing post banding. Tough meat is about the only thing I can not tolerate along with bread and some potatoes. I can eat bread and potatoes but not alot of either. Which I consider a good thing.

Unchewed lettuce getting stuck does NOT sound like my idea of fun. I've been stuck on raw carrot before, and I still shy away from them if they're not cooked to within an inch of their lives. Can you say OUCH!!!

As long as you chew chew chew chew chew, and take SMALL bites, AND take your time, salad should be fine. HOWEVER, there are people that simply cannot do lettuce after being banded no matter how they try. Hence, my cautionary statement.

Ohhh... I miss my salad too.

I'm only 3 weeks post band, so I'm still on soft foods but craving salad, especially since it's just hit summer here.

When the time comes for me to move on to solid food, I'll try the salad - but with extreme caution....

I just went for my first post op visit today. I was told to avoid for 6 months the following foods:

Celery, brocoli, peas, corn green Beans, kidney Beans, waxed beans, spinach lettuce and carrots. No coffee - not even Decaf because it is acidic as well.

The reason I was told to avoid these is because these items are Fiber rich and they make the tummy work extra hard at a time when I need it to rest and get adjusted to the band and my fills.

But I forgot to ask this - does anyone know if hi-fiber breads and cereals are okay?

I just started eating salads and I have not had any problems. I actually eat one every day for lunch. Lettuce, raw broccoli, carrots, cucumbers, tomatos, dressing. Just had my first fill and they go down fine, just have to eat slow.

I'm eating a salad now....& I have no problems with it!

I've been banded since 10/1/07 and I've probably had about 30 salads since then! Even after a 2cc fill I'm still able to eat them.

I have no problem with salads. Most the time I use oil & vinegar, maybe it lubes it down hah hah.

But deli meat turkey IN the salad.. oh god, shoot me. I won't ever try that again.
