Pills / Medicines after sleeve surgery

Recommended Posts

Just curious - what are the restrictions to taking pills after surgery? I keep hearing about crushing or powered form but what if you are on a med that needs to be taken whole?

I had no issues taking tablets at all the day after surgery. I guess it depends on how big the tablets are. My surgeon did a full medical assessment before surgery and said I would be fine

I was able to take pills normally after surgery, but this is definitely something to discuss with your surgeon ahead of time.

I only had a problem for the first couple of days due to swelling but then I was fine. But we all have different experiences around our ability to swallow tablets post surgery. I did have a little break between taking them so only took 1 or 2 & then another 1or 2 say 30 minutes later. Sometimes it’s just the larger ‘dry’ tablets that cause problems but smooth coated capsules are fine. I suggest you have a back up plan just in case you struggle with taking them.

Good luck.

As the people above me said, I also had no issue taking pills after surgery. The only thing that may be different for a while is that you won't be able to take a lot of pills at once. So if you need to take 3 pills, you might have to take 1 and then wait a while and take the next one, and so on. It will get easier though as time goes on and eventually it won't be a problem taking multiple pills at once.

My surgeon prescribed giant purple antibiotic pills, which I started taking day one. The things were massive, over an inch long. Didn’t cause any issues or additional discomfort.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
