How long does it take on average from filling out the first paperwork til surgery?

Recommended Posts

Took me 10 weeks. All depends on your insurance and surgeons requirements. If you are self pay, possibly faster.

Consult on 9/15 and surgery on 11/11. We had already done the 6 month diet requirements though and just had to get documentation for it. We also had to complete the other requirements but were able to get them completed very quickly.

I had 3 month weight monitoring program with my primary care physician before WLS surgeon could submit to insurance. That was done First week of December 2019. Got approved 8n about five business days. Surgery was scheduled for January 16th 2020. It will depend on your requirements qnd surgeons schedule.

Filled out first paperwork in June of 2017, surgery in December of 2017. No insurance issues, but surgeon had a LOT of hoops to jump through including significant weight loss with dietician, correcting Vitamin D level, psychiatric appts, endoscopy, fitness and healthy cooking class, other tests, etc.

I started the process in March, but I was self pay. Because of COVID, it got delayed and the hospital laid the surgeon and dietitian off, so I went to a different surgeon and hospital on June 15th. I had my surgery July 23rd. I had already had the EGD with the first surgeon, so I didn't need too much more done, and since I was self pay it went pretty quickly.

My ins does cover some of the cost, if I have surgery before the end of the year it would be cheaper so I was seeing if it possibly could happen. Ty

It's only February...I think there are great chances you could get a surgery date by the end of the year. If you know what surgeon you want to use, phone them and ask how long their typical patient takes from first visit to getting a surgery date. They'll have a good idea.

I started early February of last year. I had surgery 11/10. First appt was available in March, six monitored visits April-September plus dietician psych, a class, insurance submitted end of September and got my approval early October.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
