How can it be?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I have posted a few times; not for a while though. I got banded Nov. 2, 2007. I have lost 30 pounds (this includes the 13 I lost during the pre-op liquid diet). I just weighed myself and I am the same as I was last week. I guess I just don't get how I could have no loss this week when I eat SO much less in a day than I used to.

Any advice or comforting words???

Thanks,

Robin

Hi Robin and welcome to the lap band. My question is...what are you eating? You say that you are eating less, but maybe it's your choice of foods that is preventing the weight loss. Also...are you exercising? I know that it's very frustrating when you don't lose. I tend to sit at a certain weight for a while and then boom...all of a sudden it will start coming off again. Don't worry...you'll get there. You have lost a lot of weight so far for just getting the band last month. You're doing a great job. Don't get discouraged. I always say to myself..."I didn't gain it overnight so I don't expect to lose it overnight (although it would be nice)". Well...good luck...the weight will come off...

I guess I just don't get how I could have no loss this week when I eat SO much less in a day than I used to.
Many, many, many possibilities including, but not limited to:

1. "Less than I used to" doesn't mean "the right amount to lose weight." Maybe I ate 6,000 calroies pre-op. Maybe I eat 4,000 now. That's a LOT less than I used to, but still not enough that I can expect to lose weight.

2. Expecting loss every single week will eventually lead to disappointment.

3. Maybe you've lost fat, but haven't lost weight. You CAN lose fat and gain weight. Happens all the time, to just about everyone.

4. Etc., etc., etc.

Thanks for the advice. I guess I'm just being a baby today. I am scheduled for a fill on Dec. 14th, and I'm sure (?) it will help. I am not really exercising right now. I know everyone has these obstacles, but between working full-time and my family, I just can't (don't) squeeze it in. I'm in Wisconsin, so it's a no-go to walk outside, and we don't have the extra money for a gym membership. I'm planning to start using my lunch hour to walk at our mall, but not until after Christmas. I use my lunch break to Christmas shop and all that ridiculous stuff!

Tina - wouldn't it be nice if all the weight came off overnight!?!

Thanks again!

Robin

Also your body might be trying to catch up "inchwise" with the weight loss. I find if I stall, I kick the scale under the bed for a few days and get out the tape measure. Also I have noticed that if I have a glass of wine or a "high sodium" day, I gain about a pound and it takes about two days to loose it. I think the alcohol and/or sodium makes me hold in Water weight.

I'm the Queen if excuses because I don't enjoy exercising, and I'm extraordinarily reticient to do that which I do not enjoy. But if you have a drive to exercise, you can find a way. I've been known to run up & down the stairs in our house (talk about boring, but it works). There doesn't have to be a lot of pomp & circumstance around working out, just moving can get it done. If it's terribly cold out, do laps around a room in your house, or jog around the garage. Situps, jumping jacks, etc. can all be done in very little floor space.

I've gone months with no change no the scale, but lost sizes. I've gone months with no change period, only to lose 15 lbs "overnight." Our bodies do some weird things at times.

A week? Pshaw, that's nothing. Keep your head up, and keep doing what you know you need to be doing, and you'll see results. If you go long without results, it's time to examine what you're doing. As I've said about myself many times... I can't really bitch about not losing much weight when I know I'm not exercising like I need to be. Maybe my food is where it needs to be, but at this point, that's only half of it.

Girl, I'm from Saskatchewn (VERY cold in winter), and when I lived there I used to walk in the winter all the time. Put on your long underwear, scarf and toque and go for it! :) And just imagine all the extra calories your body will burn by just trying to stay warm!!

I was banded the same day as you. You're in bandster hell with me - welcome! lol It's perfectly normal and while making other changes may help you to continue to lose some weight, you're probably not going to lose it as fast as you were. I guess our bodies are trying to catch up. The nurse at the clinic said this was perfectly normal during this healing phase and that I was doing everything right. Your first fill should make a difference even though you most likely will need a couple more to reach your "sweet spot." Good luck =)

goes in spurts for some odd reason. Very mysterious to me. I always get upset when the scale stalls for a week even if I had a big loss the week before - I haven't learned yet! Be assured if you are doing things right it will pick up again.

Robin--Where in Wisconsin? I am on the shores of Lake Michigan, and there are no support groups (that I know of). Nice to find someone relatively near by!

I'm with you on the stall this week--in fact, this week I gained 1 1/2 for no good reason. Just gotta hang in there--eat right--try to exercise and HAVE FAITH! Like Wheetsin said, all of a sudden a bunch will come off all at once. My weight loss chart is not a smooth line--there are all kinds of plateaus followed by sharp declines.

Hi Linda and Robin, I'm from Baraboo, Wi. It's about 45 min from Madison, near Wi Dells. I go to Madfison sometimes to the support group at the clinic (UW hosp) where I was banded. It's such a huge group that it seems more like attending a class that a support group. I don't know any of the people. I get more support from this and another site on the internet.

I have found a food journal to be very helpful. Even though I thought I was eating less, when I added in the cheats I have had recently (chocolate), I realized the calories are adding up.

You are doing very well though, don't get discouraged. There are a couple of us out there who have been banded for two months or less, and having lost 15 or more pounds in less than two months is really great especially without a lot of restriction.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
