Pureed - how do I know if I am full?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I started my pureed diet yesterday. I started with a v8, which went wonderful.

Today I cooked up some soft scrambled eggs and melted low fat mozzarella cheese over it. I put one tablespoon on my plate. Each bite is a baby spoon, chew 20 times each spoonful, wait 20 seconds for before I grab my next spoonful, and have been eating for 20 minutes. At the pureed stage, or any, how do I know when I'm full? How do I know when to stop?

I’d like to know too! I can start puréed food Sunday and I’m longing for food.

I didn't feel much restriction at all during the puree stage. I measured out everything. Still do. I would get the hiccups when I ate too much pureed food. It takes a while to figure it all out. When you start eating real food, you'll know.

Thank you for the hiccups tip. What did you measure in the pureed portion. I wasnt given measurements. They just said 60 Protein and 64oz Water in a day.

I was told 1/3 cup and to make it last 20 to 30 minutes. If you eat too fast, you'll know. Ask me how I know. Lol. The main thing is hydration and Protein. I was able to eat 1/3 cup as soon as I started purees. At 3 months, I still can't eat much more than that.

At my follow up today I was told to measure my puréed food into a 1/4 portion and eat sssslowly for 20-30 mins. Can puréed food be chewed? It already seem mushy. Also I only have to stop drinking 15 minutes before eating and wait an hour after eating before drinking again. I was thrilled to hear I get an hour break before sipping again!

I made some pureed white peaches today and I blended it and although it was smooth, it wasn't what I was expecting. I did not chew it, but I suppose you can? I actually missed drinking today. I made soft scrambled eggs and melted cheese. I had my one table spoon that lasted 20 minutes. It was delicious. I wanted more. But my NUT has me waiting 30 minutes before and after food of not drinking. So I basically went an hour dying of thirst. I was literally counting the minutes. Anyways, from my one egg I made, I have had 2/3 of it. Tomorrow i plan on cottage cheese with the pureed peaches i made.

It is harder to tell if you’re full before you’re on solid food. Aim not for full but you’ve had enough as when you feel full you’ve actually eaten more than you need. It takes time for the message you’ve had enough to get through. For me going from enough to full can be a single teaspoon still now at almost 2 years & then I really know I’m full - groan.

I was told about 1/4 cup too & then work up to 1/3 when on solid food. And to take about 20mins to eat that 1/4 cup. I still sometimes have a 3-5minute break between spoonfuls. Oh and I couldn’t eat a whole egg for more than a year.

Congrats on your surgery.

I agree with Arabesque. You probably won't feel much if any restriction until you start on solid food. Plus you had some nerves cut during surgery, and it takes them awhile to regenerate. In the mean time, just measure out what you're supposed to eat and just eat that.

Thank you for the advise and explaining it in a different way. Congrats on being 2 years out!!

Noted and will do. Sticking to 1/4 cup 3x a day. I guess that's all I can do till I can figure out what I feel.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
