Copper & Vitamin A Toxicity

Recommended Posts

Had VSG Nov 2015. Since 2017 my labs have come back high for Vitamin A & Copper. Ive discontinued my Vitamins & had diet change to reduce the accumulation of the Copper & Vitamin A, but to no avail & they are continuing to increase. I don't know what to do & I'm very scared that I'm damaging my liver & brain.

I am trying to determine if I need to see a Hepatologist or some other specialist.

To date, my nutritionist, surgeon, & PCP don't know what to do.

Has anyone else gone through this? Did you find resolution?

I have not gone through this but if this has been going on since 2017, I would definitely suggest seeing a Hematologist or a really good Internal Medicine doctor.

Have they tested your Water? Do you have copper pipes or brass faucets that might be corroded? Usually both those conditions are due to excess supplements. Do you work on a farm or industrial area which might have contaminated waste or products that may have contaminated your water or food? Have they checked for thyroid problems, genetics, or Wilson's disease?

I'm sure your nutritionist has gone over the food that you eat. Recommended amount of copper in diet for nonpregnant adults is ~900 mcg to 1mg. Some copper-rich foods:

  • Organ meats, shellfish, tofu, mushrooms, avocado, dark chocolate, some vegetables.

Online I found that liver (1 slice = 67 grams) is VERY HIGH in copper and Vitamin A.

Liver has 10.3 mg of copper and 6582 mcg of Vitamin A!

I hope this helps and please let us know how it goes and how you are doing.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
