Hello,

I am almost 6 months post op, and just wondering if everyone is still drinking the same amount of Water we were told to in the beginning?

I found that if I drank the 8 cups a day, I could not fit in as much Protein as required.

I am now down to drinking 5-6 cups a day.

I do eat foods that contain water, such as watermelon, and cukes.

I remember after my surgery it was recommended to take a sip of Water every 5 minutes to make sure I stayed hydrated. That worked for me back then. As time went on I stopped doing that, as I am able to drink more water at once when I get thirsty. The whole 64 oz of water a day or (insert number) amount of water per day is not true. Obviously we need water and when we are unable to take a lot in at a time we need to follow some strict guidelines to not get dehydrated, but when that no longer applies, your thirst response is a very good indicator of when you should drink water and how much you should drink.

I'm getting in 60-70 ounces of Water but I also find that it limits how much food i can comfortably eat or Protein I can drink. The Protein Drinks do count towards your Fluid intake.

If I don't drink 128 oz/day, I get constipated. 8 months out of surgery.

The 6-8 cups of Water a day actually is a recommendation for everyone not just Bariatric patients. We’re pushed to drink water to get us off calorie laden carbonated drinks (there’s research about now that say artificial sweeteners cause weight gain as your body’s response to tasting sweet but not being able to gain the energy benefits so it holds on to any calories you eat.)

Because it’s difficult to measure how much Fluid we get from water rich fruit & vegetables (& I real on those to meet my goals now too) check the colour of your pee. Look for light straw coloured urine. The darker it is the more concentrated the toxins that are being excreted.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
