Gas! Ugghhh just Gassyyyy!

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on Feb. 4th. The doc did tell me of some gas discomfort but this is crazy! First 2 days I was vomiting (general anesthesia does that to me) but now it is constant gas pains. Does it get any better?!

It does, best thing you can do is walk it off. The more you move around the more it dissipates. It sounds funny but walk it off.

I had it bad in my upper chest and shoulders so I felt better after I would lift my arms up over my head as much as I could, just moving around.

It does get better, every day.

The gas pain may be better, but the gas for me is unbelievable. I never used to be a gassy person, fart a lot. 6 months post op, I can not stop farting, and pooping. It is very embarrassing, even in front of my hubby. I hope it gets better.

I had the sleeve BUT I say take the farting and the pooping because the Constipation is HORRIBLE if you get that. Pooping is embarrassing but a natural thing I mean lets be real, we all fart and poop. If you think gas pain is bad holy moly! I have a incredible pain tolerance and I have prayed to God to just take me at more times than I care to admit at a few points in this journey until I got the constipation under control. Before I got to eating enough calories and getting the whole exercise and Fiber thing right I was bound tight and ended up in the ER thinking I was going to die. Only to find out I was not dying, just FOS, a nice medical term, FULL OF ****! LOL

After two days of liquids, Miralax and finally an enema (that is embarrassing) I was better, and that hasn't happened since. So take the pooing in the meantime you will appreciate this post at some point I promise :)

This too shall pass

@cantstop1977 I completely understand. My sleeve was on 02/02 and all the meetings and appointments did not prepare me for the gas pain. The bloating is insane, it causes chest pain, back pain, and shoulder pain. It was so bad I didnt wa t to drink anything. I will say after day 3 it does get significantly better. I find that the more I fart the more it helps, I got a little gassy day 4 and much gassier day 5. I will also add today is the first day I ate and I had 2 tbsp of Greek yogurt so that may have played a part. You can do this! It does get better! Hang tight. Tomorrow will be much better!

I feel your pain. My husband keeps asking if my smelly farts will eventually go away! I know that my gas is directly related to what I eat. If I sneak a few pieces of candy, or a cookie, or a muffin, I know I'm going to be miserable with gas pain.

I'm trying very, very hard to change my snacking habits, but it is really hard. I eat according to plan up until about 7 pm. Then I find myself grazing on the wrong foods while watching TV. Hence, I end up farting all night long. I understand why my husband is frustrated!

I know I'll never be able to sustain my weight loss until I change my relationship with sweets. I wish I didn't have it in the house, but my husband (who has never had a weight problem) considers Cookies, pastries and donuts a staple of life!

No excuse, since I'm responsible for myself, but I hope you can all relate to the temptation!!!

Yes! My daughter is a huge snacker (no weight issues) and I didn’t realize how much until me being restricted. I am a bored snacker and love bread sweets but jolly ranchers and almonds were my thing! I miss them so! I have noticed that my gas wasn’t too bad today but I feel weak. I know it’s because I’m not eating but I can’t bring myself to drink some of these shakes.

oh god YES I agree. After the first 4 weeks the constipation has finally gone, and I do believe it's when I started introducing more substantial solids. ie weetbix. I was crying one day on the toilet thinking I was about to break in two, sorry for the visual but that was just the worst day of my life ever. Let me give birth to a 12 lb baby any day!!!

I also had pessaries bought from the pharmacy, and two coloxyl tablets with senna which is not only a softener, but also encourages bowel contracting to push out the rocks.

I had the SADI-s a week ago today and the gas is still awful. It's not constant, but it starts whenever I try to eat Soup (I'm still on a liquid diet for another week). It's so uncomfortable and I'm so scared that this is going to be my new normal. Did anyone still have such severe stomach gas a week past surgery? 2 weeks? Did it go away?

When it happens, all I can do is walk around, cry, and get in the shower (the hot Water on my back seems to help).

I'm so frustrated.

I had the Gastric Sleeve done gas was rough but I found the more I moved around the better I was. I also found that sipping hot tea with a good grade peppermint essential oil helped a great deal with the gas. Even today at almost three months out, if I have a gas issue I will grab a cup of tea and put a couple drops of peppermint oil in and it seams to take away the gas pain. Make sure you use a high grade essential oil but even my surgeon agrees that most of the time he found that takes a great deal of the gas pain out of the picture.

Hope that helps!

I appreciate the advice, but essential oils are extremely potent and are very dangerous to take internally. As an acupuncturist, I have many patients who are themselves involved with the essential oil MLMs of doTerra or Young Living. So often they are given this dangerous advice and I always become very firm in telling them NOT to do that. There is not enough research and safety testing around the internal use of essential oils.

I do appreciate that you're trying to help, but this is really dangerous advice to be giving people.

I do not sell oils and I am a nurse/social worker. I think we will just have to agree to disagree on this one. I have learned one thing in my 50 years of living, Herbalists know their business, Pharmacists know their business, Native American Elders know their business and I respect all of them. If an two drops of an oil I purchase homeopathic office takes away the gas that nothing else seams to help, I accept that and move on. If clove oil takes away a toothache, I use it.

My daughter is a pharmacist, my nephew is a physician I was an ortho/neuro nurse for years before I went into social work, I have learned that we may not understand or agree with someones ideas but if they work for them and improve their life and not illegal, it is a win.

Thank you for your input, I appreciate it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
