Out of pure curiosity - why Decaf coffee only? What's wrong with caffeine?

I had read mixed things about too much caffeine early on so I figured I would go Decaf. It doesn't really bother me to use the decaf. Some doctors say NO caffiene but my doctor didn't have a problem with it. I'm having some trouble getting all my Water in for the day. So I figured it might be dehydrating if I had some caffeine.

Tried to drink regular coffee and my stomach didn't agree with it. Had little cramping and indigestion. I'm on my 3rd week so I may try next week again.

Good luck, I always enjoyed lots of coffee! Right now I'm just trying to focus on drinking Water. Not easy to get all my water in. Does it get easier after the 2 week? Im on day 4

Hi - I am new to the site. My sleeve surgery is scheduled for March 10th. Anyone else here set for March? I am super anxious but also looking forward to it. I had a lap band in 2009 and a slip in 2014 that required removal. Curious as to what your pre-op diet looks like. I am on partial liquids now and full liquids for two weeks before the surgery.

Nice to meet everyone!

Mine is March 9. I had two weeks of mostly meat and veggies (yogurt and Jello or popsicles for snacks) and now I am on two days of “liquid” which is Protein Shakes, jello, popsicles and yogurt. I am dreading dinner cause it’s going to be so hard to convince my mind that a shake is enough (although I was fine for Breakfast and lunch so I know it’s in my head)

I had mine March 2 and am still in the hospital, I had some complication but on the mend now. Still on the clear liquid diet. I am not on any pain meds, not having any pain except for gas.how hard was it to move to phase 2? I read one post that kind of scared me. I have a terrible taste in my mouth, anyone else have that issue?

I really hope you feel better soon. I agree with some of the others that he just really need to focus on Clear Liquids and make sure you can tolerate it. I'm not on phase 2 yet but I think I will be tomorrow.

Caffeine is a diuretic, after surgery when you can only consume such a little amount you don't want to risk dehydration.

My doctor said caffeine is dehydrating so it’s not good until you can drink your 64 ounces of fluids.

Good news as said above: your doctor needs to update his information. Scientific study quoted above :)

This is so crazy because my drs restricted on the pre-op diet as well. They act like caffeine is the enemy lol Thanks for sharing the info.

Hi, I am new to this site as well. My surgery gastric bypass is scheduled for March 16th. I am worried about absorption of my antidepressants. Anyone else in the same boat?

I decided on the sleeve for this reason. I couldn’t get any clear answers even after talking to the manufacturers about either surgery but I know that absorption with sleeve is better than bypass. The best advice anyone could give was to tweak the extended release to immediate release and to go off my Medication that requires a certain calorie count for absorption.

Also to just know that you may need to contact your doctor to adjust dosage and even change to a new medication entirely. I kept thinking LOW absorption doesn’t mean NO absorption so just increase the dosage and it will be fine but that’s not necessarily the case they say.

However, after 10 years of fighting to find the right medication I thought I was on the only ones that would work for me and psychiatrist changed my meds PRIOR to surgery to help ease my mind that there was another medication that works for me. You don’t have as much time to do that but if you are still seriously concerned you could push your surgery date out a bit??

Yeah. And patients adopt it to their toolbox of 'Things I Can't Have' which re-affirm they're "doing something". It's the same as the "omg I am eating 400 calories a day, is that too much" crutches.

Obligatory "you should do what your doctor says" line here, too. Maybe there's a personal reason for someone to not be able to drink coffee. Maybe there's other issues (acid, complications, etc.). But the dehydration part? No basis in science. And pre-op? That's just ridiculous.

yeah - there is no other reason. Every patient in the practice get the "no caffeine" two weeks pre-op and 4 weeks post op. Frustrating.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
