Setting a goal weight?

Recommended Posts

How did everyone come up with their goal weight? Beside the initial appointment no one on my medical team has talked about a one, and that was just asking me where I’d like to be. My personal is 181 the weight I was when I graduated boot camp in 1994.

I wanted a normal BMI. For my height, that meant weighing 132 or under. So I rounded down and set a goal of 130.

My doc never gave me a goal, but the dietician did ask if I had a goal in mind. They also told me what I could “expect” to lose if I followed the program. That number lined up with where I want to be, which is still considered obese according to BMI. I’m not a huge fan of it because it doesn’t take into account muscle mass v. fat. As the saying goes, I don’t want to look skinny, I want to look like I can kick your a$$.

My gastroenterologist (who diagnosed my GERD/Gastritis/Esophagitis) wants me to get to normal BMI. For me that's 145, so that's my goal. My surgeon never really discussed a weight loss goal since my surgery was for GI issues, not weight loss.

But I know when I has the gastric sleeve done, my surgeon told me his goal is always for better health for his patients. So he never discussed weight goals, rather things like getting off blood pressure meds, lowering my glucose levels, getting off a by pap machine etc. I did all of that, and he was happy.

This makes me laugh. Before surgery, it seems like it is all about numbers just to get approved. After surgery when I asked about what my goal should be, they told me they don’t like to focus on numbers. They would rather focus on feeling and being healthy. I agree with them but I set a goal in my mind of 135 which just moves me into the Normal weight category. I don’t recall the last time I was a normal weight and I figure there is no better time to get there! I am 3 months out and have lost 32 lbs. seems slow but the scale is moving in the right direction and if it continues, I could be at my goal in about 6 months.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
