Distraction after surgery

Recommended Posts

I have found in previous diets and lifestyle changes that I do better if I have something else new to focus on as well that’s not stressful for me. For example, I was able to lose 50lbs and do a triathlon a year after I had my son because weight loss wasn’t my primary thought at that time, my new baby was. But things that are too stressful and occupy too much time sabotage me. For example, I gained back the 50lbs and then some after I started back to college full time. So I was thinking of adopting a puppy after my surgery (like 6 weeks after so I’ve healed) to keep me occupied but not stressed out. It’d also give me a reason to be more active. I think it’d also be good for my kids because I know that it can be scary watching a parent go through surgery, especially at a young age, and it’ll help them feel better. Is this a good idea or no? Has anyone else done something like this?

Aww, that seems like a great idea!

I assume you've had a puppy before? Because I remember it being almost like having an actual newborn at times, lol. With everything going on, that would probably be a real positive for your kiddos and you're right, with warmer weather coming, it's a good excuse to go for a w-a-l-k. (Sorry, I'm afraid to even type it out because somehow my dogs will KNOW and start jumping all over wanting to go for one!)

I've seen a lot of people start blogs or Instagram accounts where they document their progress. That might be a decent distraction, yet not stressful. Do you garden? You could always plan one out with the kids to get them excited for spring and growing their own food. Pick out seeds/starts together, etc.

Whatever you choose, it sounds like you've got a good grasp on what works for you!

I’ve had puppies before and while I’ve heard people say that, I’ve never known it to be nearly as much work as a newborn. I also plan to get an older puppy (like a year or so old) so I don’t have to worry about house breaking them or anything.
Gardening is a great idea! I used to do that a lot when I was younger but haven’t in a while. I planned to do a weight loss blog to keep me accountable but it wouldn’t really distract me from my journey because it would be about my journey if that makes sense. Thanks for your advice 😊

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
