Delayed shoulder pain and ill

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have been a lurker here for awhile and appreciate everyone's insight.

I had VSG surgery on 1-19-21, so 9 days ago.

Things have been going really well for the most part. I'm getting over 100 ounces of hydration daily and 60-75 g of Protein.< /p>

Yesterday afternoon I started not feeling great. Run down, tired, a little light headed. Today I've felt bad pretty much all day, and I noticed that my left shoulder has started to hurt. I did not have any of that pain right after surgery, which I know is common.

I do not have a fever, but my stomach feels sick. I have taken Zofran and it hasn't helped much.

I'm curious on anyone's thoughts on my situation.

9 days from the hospital?

Do you have other symptoms that may point to Covid?

Edited to add: sorry, I don't mean to freak you out if I did, just doing a process of elimination...

No worries, that was my first thought too. Fortunately, I don't have any shortness of breath or other respiratory symptoms, so I'm hopeful it isn't that.

I had bad left shoulder / arm pain that showed up after a few days. It scared me it was so bad. Dr said an air pocket on the diaphragm can cause that and sure enough it subsided pretty fast and was completely gone in a few days. I’d be concerned about any fever following surgery. Infection can’t be ruled out and you don’t want to let it get worse. If not better today I’d start making calls to be seen by someone.

Thank you, I'm waiting on a callback from my surgeon.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
