Newbie & 1st stall

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I'm new to this site. I had Gastric sleeve done on 12/28/2020. Today marks 4 weeks post op and I feel pretty good. My only concern right now is my first stall. I lost 17 lbs for the first week after surgery. Then I hit a stall. Which was fine my doctor warned me about it and he said it would last a little bit. So I expected 1 week to 2 weeks max. But today I hit the 3 week mark on this stall and my weight keeps fluctuating 3 lbs. I gain 3lbs and I lose 3 lbs. I'm very frustrated. I've gotten between 70 and 80 oz of Water each day and Protein is about the same. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Has anyone experienced this much time between stalls? I see my doctor on Wednesday. So I will definitely ask him if it's normal. I'm just curious if anyone else has gone through this?

Hello I had the sleeve done 11/30 and week 2 I had a stall that lasted 3 weeks and I gained 5 pounds. I went to the nutritionist and she told me I needed to eat more because my body is going into starvation mode. After I did that I started to se a few pounds come off. I still think its not enough. I see the doctor tomorrow he will let me know what he thinks.

Hello, I had bypass 12/17 and hadn’t lost weight since 1/1/2021. Today I finally went down a pound and am *hoping* this “stall” is over... 25 days is a long time, made me feel like a failure, but I’ll remain hopeful. I say “stall” because I know through photos and measurements that I was losing inches.

good luck, I hope your stall ends quickly!

Mine lasted two weeks, but a friend of mine (another RNY patient) had her first stall last three weeks - so it's not unheard of. Just stick to your plan and stay off the scale if you need to, and it WILL break - it always does!

Thank you all for the encouraging words! I will try upping my calories. My nutritionist said that they didn't want us to snack during the day, just 3 meals per day. But I can only get 1.5 to 2.5 oz of food in per meal. And I've noticed that I am getting hungry 2 hours later but I don't eat. I usually just drink a little bit of my Protein Shake. I try not to drink a full Premier Protein between meals because then I don't want to eat during meals time and I get even less food in. I'm starting see how tricky this balance is going to be lol. I will be email my nutritionist and see what she says about small Snacks.

My surgery was 12/29. I have been stalled for 15 days and thinking this is going to last a bit longer. I have pushed myself the past two days to eat more so I'm up to 800-900 calories. Are you walking also? I'm a bit tired still but got 7k steps in yesterday, which is about 2k more than normal.

Congrats on your surgery. Yep, stalls are frustrating. You’re dropping pounds then nothing. Look at it as your body playing catch-up. It’s going through a lot & is taking a break.

My longest stall was 2 1/2 weeks when I was 1 kg from goal. Grrr. It was right there ... I never changed a thing & my stalls still broke.

There’s a lot talk about starvation mode & upping calorie intake. The term starvation mode is actually incorrect. The correct term to describe what is occurring is adaptive thermogenesis. This is the body reducing the metabolism rate (calories burnt) in response to a reduction in caloric intake. Weight loss will reduce the number of calories you burn but studies show it’s only about 6 calories per pound lost. But a high Protein diet can boost your metabolism by 80 - 100 calories per day. So I guess the take away is make sure you’re meeting your protein goals each day to keep your metabolism up & counter balance any metabolic slow down from a reduced caloric intake.

Good luck. This too will pass.

Msjessiruiz, did you have the sleeve? The hunger every 2 hours is common. Don’t start caving into that hunger with a snack. It’s a horrible habit that will lead to weight gain. Trust me. I had the sleeve years ago with the same issue.

What did you do to control the hunger every two hours? I have that problem! I had my sleeve done on 12/28/20 also. But my doctor didn't seem to mind that I had a slice of turkey deli meat in between the meals. I eat three times a day. But have something with Protein in it between. Usually the deli meat or some stick cheese or humus. I haven't hit a stall yet though. I was 306 the day of surgery and was 268 on Tuesday.

Not a sleever and not on 3 meals a day, but just wanted to say congrats on your wonderful loss! Why change a winning team - it sounds like you're doing so well :)

Oh thank you so much! And you're right. I guess changing it now wouldn't benefit me any more. Lol. I just didn't think of it that way. I just thought of it as always snacking and didn't wanna go back to that habit.
I have been exercising and going to the gun since like day 6, so that may be why I'm doing well. Again, thank you for your encouraging words! [emoji5]

You're more than welcome! Between us, I think they discourage snacking in some programs because that's like the way to 'eat around' the sleeve for you guys. Still, we also know being actively hungry makes people - well, the hormonal system that controls so much of our behavior, really - give up on the plan at some point.

It's a MILLION times better to have a plan that works for you than it is to feel guilty about the choices you make.

Maybe just make a rule for yourself that if you're snacking between meals, it's something to satisfy hunger, not emotion. Or whatever works for you :)

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
