Excited and Terrified!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys! I've recently come across this forum and it has already proven to be very useful. I have just started the process in hopes of having the lap band procedure. Being so young, I feel as though I'm about to get the life that everyone else has! My doctor has helped me so much and you can tell she's really in it for me!

I do have a few questions for everyone... if you don't mind any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

~I've never had any surgery - nothing, nada! I've never even had a broken bone. The most painful thing I've ever had were kidney stones. For those who have been banded... what's the pain like after the surgery. This is the root of all fear for me - the fear of the unknown!

~I don't have much support from my family or my husband. With the exception of my mother and a few friends they all believe that I'm taking the easy way out and am not willing to try. My husband is also overweight and loves me just the way I am. Although it's very sweet and I love him for it, he would rather see me overweight because we're so comfortable with each other. He doesn't want to hear about my doctors appointments or learn about the process. Have any of you had to deal with lack of support, and if so, how did you get through it?

Anything you guys can offer would be greatly appreciated! I admire all of you who have taken the step to a better, healthier life. One day I hope to be in your shoes! ;)

Take care,

Amanda :help:

Amanda,

As far as the pain of this particular sx, I am yet to find out (my surgery is in 2 days). From what I have read on this forum, it is not bad at all. You are up and walking around same day. The worst for most seems to be the gas pains from the laparscopy itself. They do tiny incisions and put instruments in you abdomen, I believe they have to put air (correct me if I am wrong anyone) inside to make more room to move around. I have had a laparscopic surgery and I was fine the same day. I have had a c-section and I was up and walking around the next day, making my bed at the hospital the 3rd day. Everyone has different pain tolerances.

I have no support from my hubby either. He is tall and skinny. He doesn't even know I am getting the surgery done on Thursday. I just told him that one day I am going to do it. He thinks we should work out together and eat better together. What he doesn't understand is that this is not his problem, this is my problem. My mom is supportive and she says if it was her in my shoes she would do it too. My close friend is morbidly obese and she supports me but does not agree with me. Of all people I would think she would understand. The best support I have gotten is on this forum. I am not sure what your BMI is, but mine is low, only 30 and there is a low BMI (30-40) thread with a bunch of great supportive people. Check it out, that is where I spend most of my time. Hope this helps, I will be posting after my surgery, you can see how I feel. I don't think it is going to be that bad. Good luck!

Hi there....

I am on the same boat as AudricIan. My husband does not even know. He knows I am having a surgery but does not know anything else. He is sometimes supportive, and sometimes he is not. I did ask him if I lost all this weight and kept it off for 6 months would he pay for a Tummy Tuck. And surprisingly he said yes. I mean he does spoil me at times, but when it comes to that kind of stuff not so much. I don't blame him all the diets I have done, all the money spent...the track record is not in my favor. But I know once he starts to see the difference he will be very supportive.

My mother is also my support besides this website. She is even excited for me.

As to your hubby I am sure once he begans to see your loss and notice your health and energy levels get better and better and see that you don't go back to old ways...who knows he might even go down the same path with you. Just be open minded!

Thanks so much guys! I'm sorry that you are having to go through this without a lot of support. I've often read while doing research that this is a big part of the whole process. I wish you guys all the luck with your surgery and definitely let me know how you feel! Oh... and I want to see some before/after pics! :)

I think it's all going to be ok... I woke up this morning with the most hopeful attitude. My BMI is 44 and I think the day before my surgery I'm going to go buy a pair of jeans and a shirt from American Eagle. (I always wanted to buy clothes from there and never could). That's going to be my target!

Oh...I'm sorry to hear....that's why I am choosing January giving people whose coverage is changing a chance to get in by the end of December. They ask at the doc office.....

wasn't that nice of me...?!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
