KelBel3040 14 Posted January 17, 2021 I have hypothyroid but I'm doing the sleeve. My inability to lose weight due to complexities of hypothyroid is why I'm getting the surgery on January 21st. Are you pre or post op? 2 RobinRN and SophieJo reacted to this

KelBel3040 14 Posted January 18, 2021 Good to know I'm not the only hypothyroid person on here. Was that the major reason for getting sleeved/ bypass surgery? 1 RobinRN reacted to this

Hi 🙋♀️ - I have hypothyroidism and had the RNY bypass in October 2020. It definitely contributed to my decision to get the surgery as it made it so much more difficult to lose weight by dieting. How's it going since getting surgery? My weight loss has been steady, but not quick! Castrad01 8 Posted January 18, 2021 Yes I was having the same issue with being able to lose weight, weight loss has been slow. I am half way through week 4 and current weight loss is 14lbs. The months leading up to surgery i worked hard to loss 30lbs. I wanted to create this group so I could share my experiences with ppl who have hypothyroidism and see if we are experiencing the same challenges with weight loss after surgery. How us your weight loss @Deb9386 3 KelBel3040, mwcunnin and RobinRN reacted to this
Deb9386 110 Posted January 18, 2021 I started the pre-op diet in mid August, and had lost 17.5 lbs by my surgery date of 22 October - not a particularly amazing weight loss really. Since surgery (3 months) I've lost a further 37 lbs, so averaging about 3 lbs per week. Since starting with the hypothyroidism some years ago I've found it really tough to lose weight and so I'm pleased with the weight loss so far, but I can see it definitely isn't as good as some other forum members. You've done really well with your weight loss so far @Castrad01 , but I know it's frustrating to see others losing more quickly! I'd think the hypothyroidism might have an effect on the rate of weight loss? I've found it's been very difficult to get the medication levels completely right. I've tried all sorts of different things with my food intake since surgery and nothing seems to make much of a difference. I'm seeing my Consultant in 2 weeks for follow-up and I think I'll ask him his opinion on this.
KelBel3040 14 Posted January 20, 2021 I worry if the sleeve is for me due to my hypothyroid. If the rate of weight loss is still super slow I keep thinking maybe I shouldn't go through with it. 1 SophieJo reacted to this

Has to be your decision of course - I was finding it extremely difficult to lose weight prior to surgery and post-surgery I am losing without any real difficulty, even if the rate of weight loss is slower than other peoples. I had over 5 stone to lose and just knew that I wouldn't be able to do this without surgery. Part of the issue for my hypothyroidism is that I think my medication isn't at the correct level - I have never been able to get a referral on the NHS by my family doctor to an endocrinologist and looking at thyroid forums my family doctor isn't doing all of the blood tests that should be done and won't consider doing them (cost to the NHS). Because of the system here in the UK I'd have to get a private appt with the endocrinologist and then it's difficult to get the ongoing treatment plan/blood tests provided via the NHS so I'd have a large ongoing financial cost. If your medication is controlling your hypothyroidism effectively then you might have better/quicker weight loss?
TreeTrunks 108 Posted January 20, 2021 I also have thyroid issues...currently on synthroid and liothyronine. The little amount of weight I have lost thus far has been hard fought and so, I have been wondering how this will play into weight loss after surgery. I think @Deb9386 might be on to something with the meds...(Good luck with the endno doc - crossing my fingers for you!) Hopefully we can all find that fine line of what amounts we need to take. It has been a long battle trying to get that number correct...I have a feeling it may continue to be one. But, the great news is that your doctor actually has agreed you have a thyroid issue. Most don't even bother testing for it. Good Luck everyone. I will make sure to post my results as I go along.... 2 Reddpanda and Deb9386 reacted to this
ksgypsy 54 Posted January 25, 2021 I have hypothyroidism as well. I feel as though my weight loss has been slow. My 3 months is on February 4th and I'm down 41lbs. I'm happy that the 41 is gone but the last few weeks have been 2lbs per week. Hopefully it will pick back up soon!
Castrad01 8 Posted January 25, 2021 I am down 21lbs currently, my first month is tomorrow. Yes i feel it has been slow moving for me as well.. My first 2 weeks I have lost 7lbs, then 3 lbs the last 2 weeks. Congrats on hitting 41lb weight loss. @ksgypsy 1 ksgypsy reacted to this
