Preparing for Gastric Bypass

Recommended Posts

Hello, everyone! I'm new here, but have almost had gastric bypass a little over a year ago. I had pretty much finished the checklist my doc gave me: nutrition classes, sleep study, upper gi, 6 months weight tracking.

All I had left was a blood panel, the h pylori test, and a psychological evaluation. I suffer from anxiety, depression, and body dysmorphia, so the psychological doc put a temporary hold on the surgery. Unfortunately, COVID hit before I could get re-evaluated. Non essential and non emergency surgeries were put on hold for in my network.

Sadly, because it been about a year now, my insurance and doc is making me go through the whole process all over again sans the sleep study. Luckily I was able to schedule my nutrition classes and upper gi for the next few weeks.

If all goes well I should be approved a little before midyear. Wish me luck!

Welcome! Sorry to hear that you have to start the whole process over again, but I hope that means you are in a better place (mental health-wise) to have the surgery. Please feel free to post with any questions that come up during the process. There are lots of people here who have been through it and are happy to help. Good luck!

@BigSue thank you for you kind words and support. I'm definitely in a better place with my mental health. I have so many questions that I plan to ask on here, but wanted to introduce myself first. I'm so excited, nervous, and scared all at once. Most of all I'm ready to make this exponential change in my life.

@dal101 thank you! I've been seeing a lmhc and a psychiatrist very regularly. We've made a lot of progress, so I'm hoping this will make the process smoother than last time around.

If you ever need to talk, I'm here for you.

:) Thats sweet of you, likewise message me whenever you need to.

Yeah I am not fond of the psychiatrist they allocated to me as they thought I wouldnt be able to lose and maintain weight because of my emotional status. I am not paying extra to see someone who doubts me like that.

Oh gosh! Mine is more focused on getting me prepared and mentally ready for the surgery. Of course mine wasn't assigned to me. I found them through my insurance.

My niece got the sleeve and she has body dysmorphia ad well. She's doing great! Lost over 100 lbs. She looks and says she feels so much better. More comfortable in her own skin.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
