Need to restart taking my vitamins!!!

Recommended Posts

I'm 4.5 years out and completely stopped taking my Vitamins. I have no idea why, just a fact. I had the sleeve.

The last time I got some they were different brands that I just picked up at Walmart. So not even sure if I got the right ones.

I would like to purchase them through here so I know that I'm getting actual "bariatric" vitamins. But I don't even know where to start or which ones I need. I remember taking a daily, a B12, Calcium and I don't remember what else.

Any thoughts on where to start? Thanks!

here are the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery guidelines. They list what supplements all WLS patients should take, as well as those specific to each surgery (they call the sleeve "SG" or "LSG" here)

you don't necessarily need bariatric-specific Vitamins, although they do make things a bit easier. But any Vitamin routine is fine if it fits into these guidelines. I've never used bariatric-specific vitamins. My multiple vitamin is just two Centrums (or the generic version of Centrum - both CVS and Walgreens have them - as well as some other places). I then take a few single-vitamin supplements that are required for RNY.

It might be interesting to see what your lab levels are at this point. You could ask your PCP to order labs (you'll probably have to give her/him the list).

Just curious as to why you have to restart taking your Vitamins? Have you had a recent blood test which showed your levels are low?

I ask as I stopped taking mine a year ago about 8 months after my surgery & 2 months into maintenance. They’d make me so nauseated. I used to have the same problem before surgery whenever I’d think I needed to take them for a boost.

My understanding was that as a sleeve patient there was not a long term need for multivitamins if I could absorb all my requirements through what I eat.

My surgeon was fine with my decision & all my bloods come back fine. Had a test this morning so fingers crossed nothing’s changed.

Im in the same boat as @Arabesque. I sopped taking my Vitamins in March last year (~1.5 years post op, or 8 mnths into maintenance). I had labs done this past june as well as December and all my levels came back satisfactorily. Also the results of a bone density scan done in December was of no concern.

Maybe check with your doc/have labs done to see if it is in fact required?

P.S. I was sleeved too.

I know this thread hasn't been posted in for a few weeks but I also wanted to say along with @Arabesque and @ms.sss that I haven't taken my Vitamins in quite a while. I took them for about a year, give or take a few months, after my sleeve surgery. I had my blood tested recently and everything was good for me as well. I'm sure it won't apply for everyone but for a lot of people, myself included, I would think that when you are able to eat a normal amount of food again following the surgery, as long as you are eating a balanced diet then you are probably getting all the nutrients you need. Of course, I am not a doctor though and everything I say should be taken with a very large grain of salt!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
