Feeling sick, freezing and overheated at the same time... 8 days out from RNY

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Looking for some advice about some symptoms I'm having. First of all, there is the weirdness of temperature -- my nose, hands, and feet are freezing but the rest of me feels overheated -- yet I do not have a fever.

Also, I feel sick. Just crappy and ill. Just gross and like I have the flu or am sick to my stomach. Yes, there is gas and burps but it's more than that. I am struggling with both hydration and full liquids, though I am getting my 64 oz in a day. I don't want to drink or eat because I feel so horrible for the hours after.

I have slowed down my eating and drinking, set a timer for bites (again, full liquids so sips really), set a timer for sips of Water (I can not do flavored things like Crystal Light even though I lived on them pre-surgery) and still just feel bad.

Any advice? Is this all normal sounding? Honestly, I felt better before I started eating and drinking again. The first 3 days post-op were super smooth sailing and I had essentially no pain, gas or otherwise. Now I'm in the regrets -- which I knew were coming but it's still emotionally a lot.

Thanks!

Definitely check in with your Team when anything changes, but no fever is usually a really good sign.

Feeling flushed especially in waves is common and a lot of us feel cold all the time.

Sometimes the temperature of what you're drinking can make a difference on whether or not it will sit well.

If you started feeling sick after you moved to the next food stage, maybe it's an intolerance to something you recently added. Are you still taking anti-nausea meds, PPIs that were prescribed to you?

Sorry you're in Regretville but hopefully you'll be out of it soon ♥️

The first few weeks are difficult. Re the feeling cold and also hot - I have this too. I think it might be down to the hormone changes generated by the bypass surgery. As long as you don't have a fever maybe just see how it goes. I felt sick for some time after surgery and was taking anti-nausea medication. It went after a few weeks. Good luck with it, but if you're worried definitely check in with your doctor.

I had some hot and cold flashes on Day 2 and 3. Nothing lasted for more than a few minutes and my temperature was normal, too. I hope you feel better soon!

I had a few days after the surgery that I felt exactly that same way. Of course check with your care team!!!! I did some research and what I found was that your body might be in ketosis, And the start of that generally makes you feel like you have a bit of flu.. I kind of chalked my symptoms up to that and I felt much better a couple days later..

I am 5 days post vsg and have been freezing or swearing. I’m making my husband nuts moving the thermostat. It’s winter here in NY. My hands feet and nose are freezing too, but I am still on liquids. From what I’ve read it seems common. As long as you don’t have a fever.
Before when I’d go on a liquid fast or Atkins the moment I introduced carbs my body would overheat. Just a thought.

Right now, I have fuzzy socks and warm throws I’ve been trying to use. I watched hours of you tube videos of others who have gone through this. Hope this is just a phase, keep your goal and end game in mind!!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
