Allergic reactions..

Recommended Posts

Has anyone done a 1200 calorie diet for like 2 months straight (eating healthier foods) and then cheated and ate something you haven't had since before your diet then had an allergic reaction to it? I cheated on Christmas day and then again yesterday and ended up having my throat close up on me, could hardly breathe. I didn't eat anything new that I've never eaten before.. just hadn't eaten those things for the past 2 months. I feel like my body is punishing me for cheating lol Thankfully though those situations made me decide I'm not cheating again.

Christmas day I had some hawaiian rolls, turkey and mashed potatoes. Yesterday, I had a burger king chicken sandwich and fries. Only thing I could think of is the breads.. but i used to eat bread all the time before this diet.

I'm not a doctor, but the first thing I thought about was a possible reaction to the bread after you hadn't eaten it for so long. Maybe you'd cleared it out of your system and that dose of bread did not sit well?

That's what I was thinking too, I've been eating gluten free stuff since I started dieting and since we found out that my son has a gluten allergy too.

Having your throat close up with difficulty breathing is a very serious allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. It is life threatening. The second exposure can be much worse than the first. It might be worth having some allergy testing done to try to figure out exactly what food was responsible. Gluten intolerance does not usually result in anaphylaxis, but until you get actual testing you'll never know for sure. It would not be advisable to try to figure this out on your own by trying different foods to see if you get a reaction, because the next reaction could be much worse.

Thanks. I'll have a talk with my doctor. But after experiencing this, I'm definitely sticking to my diet and won't be straying from it again.

It's definitely the BREAD! I can't eat an Arby's sandwich or really ANY sandwich anymore. I just eat the meat or insides and throw away the bun. It "sticks" or something and I get what we call here in the forums "the foamies" where you throw up mucus (not food) and you feel totally full and choking. Your body is trying to tell you that you can't eat that food anymore.

It's weird though because I haven't had my surgery yet. But it does make sense about our bodies telling us we can't eat certain things anymore.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
