I was diagnosed with diverticulitis on Friday. It was awful. I'm on antibiotics and feel a lot better now. I have pre-admission testing on Tuesday and a VSG scheduled for January 22nd. I plan to call my Dr tomorrow but will this affect my pre-admission testing? or worse yet, my surgery date? Ugh. After all the steps to get to this point, it will suck off things are postponed.

I have had two bowel resections due to diverticulitis. I can tell you from years and years and years of history with it, that there it is awful But if you watch your diet and not eat the things that are on your no no list you wont have issues. I am only 5 weeks post VSG and I have not had any issues at all but I haven't had any desire to eat any foods that are on my no no list.

It by no means affected my surgery. I actually went in wanting the gastric bypass but with my history of having the bowel resections due to dead tissue from bad diverticulitis bouts they said they didnt want to mess with my bowels so they decided they wanted to go with the sleeve. I was disappointed at first but I have done super good with it and lost over 40 pounds so far so I am pleased.

Just take the horrible meds until they are gone, stay away from all the foods they tell you to stay away from and you will be fine :)

Thank you for your post, Betty1971! I have had a colectomy due to diverticulitis, removed about 13 or 14 inches of bowel, and I wondered how my surgeon would determine which procedure would work best. I have only had my first meeting with her thus far, and have an endoscopy and colonoscopy scheduled for January 7th. I think that I recall from our appointment that she said the sleeve wouldn't involve the intestines, whereas the bypass would. I need to clarify that with her. Unfortunately, I also have a sliding hiatal hernia that needs repair, and a very large incisional hernia in my lower abdomen from the colectomy that needs repair - which the first surgeon I saw wouldn't do until I lost weight. It's like a vicious circle to find out how to approach everything.😣

Your post relieved some of my anxieties about this! I have read post after post to see if anyone has had a similar situation. So thank you!

When I went in the Dr said they would not touch my intestines due to all the scar tissue, when I had my VSG I they did have a little trouble with some scar tissue because of all of my previous surgical procedures BUT they were able to due it laparoscopically and besides maybe a little more sore due to some muscle pain and I had seven little incisions instead of five or six as I have seen, I had no problems at all.

I still have Constipation issues, as most do. Stool softness and an occasional ginger tea and abdominal massage take care of that.

My dietitian actually claim that I shouldn't have any issue at all because popcorn and other foods that were on my naughty list before are on my naughty list now :)

Wow, that's interesting, too! My colectomy was done in 2015, and I wasn't given a list of no-no foods. I occasionally have popcorn now, but I can give it up if it's a no-no after surgery. I am looking forward to sessions with the nutritionist to see what things I can or cannot eat.

I sure hope tomorrow finds you feeling better! And that it doesn't delay your surgery.

Dr says it shouldn't effect my surgery and I can continue with my pre-admission testing tomorrow, as scheduled. Thank goodness!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
