Metal, XRays, Airports, and MRIs

Recommended Posts

Has anyone with the band gone on a flight since they have been banded? Does the metal backing of the port (it is there so that they can see the port on xray) set off the detector? Do things feel wierd with air pressure (I guess scuba divers could answer this as well)? Lastly since I have previously had knee issues and worry i could have more later on, has anyone had an MRI? I was thinking that with the metal MRIs are ruled out.

There is another thread out there somewhere where the woman says she set off the metal detector with her port. They had to wand her in a private room. I haven't however had that happen to me yet.

I fly frequently and have flown numerous times since being banded 6 weeks ago (total of 10 flights). I set off 1 detector but it was excused as my underwire bra.

The band & port should not set off anything. If it does go off - I would look for other causes (like my bra). Even the plates, screws & wires in my ankle from a bad break didn't set off the alarms.

Not sure on the MRI though.

I don't know about the band, but I have titanium screws in my knee cap and I have never set off the airport alarms. I have also had no problems with an MRI - maybe because the screws are imbedded in bone? I didn't have any problems with metal fillings in the MRI either....

No - the band does not set off metal detectors at the airport... I flew 10 days after surgery and returned home with no problem.

I did hear something interesting tho. I heard that after flying, restriction can be increased for a few days (I guess it is from the pressure change). I am flying from VA to LA over New Years - and will be doing a 5 day fast while I am there... I hope it's true, hahahaha. Will let you guys know what happens.

I've flown since being banded, and no problem with the metal detectors. I've also gone scuba diving, and didnt have a problem. Didnt have any issues with pressure changes. ;)

This is awesome, cause i both travel and scuba so with the weight off I can do all of this much better. If only there was a surgery to make me shorter for those seats (i'm 6'4"). Pluse if i lose, no more knee issues, i hope.

Hell, Dan, I am 5'3" and have trouble with those seats! Dude, you must have a time of it. The Answer: Get there early and get the Bulkhead seat... hahaha

I fly every week and have never had a problem with security (and I still wear all my jewelry). I also have not had a problem with pressure. In fact, I think I can eat more on a plane. I know a lot of people say they can't eat on a plane. I have also been on 4 long flights since being banded (over 10 hours).

I've been reading this thread the past few days and laughing. The idea of the port setting off a store or airport alarm sounded kind of absurd! Well, I am no longer laughing. Yesterday at Jewel and at Walgreen's, I set off the alarms going in and out of the store. Not sure if it was just a weird coincidence or if the port story is true!

Maybe the port turned or something. It is kinda weird though. And my crazy self didn't even think about. I raised my hands up like i was guilty and said "I didn't steal nothing"

you must be from chicago cota129; jewel's is the only store i know of there. i am originally from there.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
