Will the heartburn ever go away

Recommended Posts

3 days out of surgery and today is my mushy meal day. I’m suppose try to eat 3 meals a day with 3 Protein Shakes in between meals. I don’t know where on earth will it all fit, but I’m trying. Sometimes I drink Protein Water instead of shakes, because it’s easier. The problem is the moment I Try to eat past 2oz of food I get heartburn... like if food is trapped .

Will that go away? It’s that normal?

I have to use gasx or take a sip of water to ease it?
A part of me is reconsidering asking for my stomach back.

So Idk who gave you the advice to eat mushy foods 3 days out from surgery.but you are only supposed to have Clear Liquids. No pureed food or anything. You can have Jello and sugar free popsicles. Drink your Protein Drinks. Bone Broth, Isopure liquid drinks are great as 20 Fluid oz has 40 grams of protein.. Gaterade zero with unflavored Protein Powder you could do too. But no food. Just sip sip sip clear liquids. That's your job just to get your liquids and Protein in.
Here is a link that is very beneficial. Good luck!

Holy Moses, I am three weeks post op and I JUST started soft foods!!! I was lucky to get two full Protein Shakes in a day during my full liquid days!!! I was on clear liquids for the first week after surgery and then after that full liquids for two weeks....I cannot even fathom soft foods three days out.

I was also given a scrip for omeprazole 40 mg to take for 3 months post op and then he said we would discuss it.

Most programs prescribe a PPI such as omeprazole for a while after surgery because heartburn is not uncommon. It also sounds like something like gas-x would be appropriate.

Programs vary widely on dietary progressions, and if yours calls for mushies, at this time, that is fine, though you personally may not yet be ready for it. We were on purees and mushy things from the hospital on out, though not all could handle them that early, and much of the early diet was still a lot of liquid.

Our general rule was to try new foods one at a time to test for tolerance; if it worked, great, if not, go back to what was working and try that food again in a week or two. So, you may be trying something that you aren't ready for yet, but something else mushy may work. Or, you may have to stick to liquids a few more days. People will have varying amounts of inflammation in their newly cut stomachs, so will vary widely on how easily things move through for a while - for some, just Water is very slow to go through while others can easily handle yogurt and other soft and mushy things - both are within normal expectations so don't worry if things aren't going through that well yet, (or conversely, if things are going through easily while others struggle.)

My doctor did at the hospital. He said if I feel up to it, I could try eating mushy foods.
From reading the blogs and talking to people I realize every doctor treats their patients different.
Im actually going back to liquids on my own . Thanks for the advice

I get calls everyday. Today they told me I could try tuna or soft fish’. I’ll check again during my post op appointment.

Thank you!
I thought was wrong with me.
I’ll stick to liquids at least for another week or so and when I’m ready I’ll try mushy foods.
Not trying to rush the process.
I want to be able to eat food and enjoy it, without the heartburn.
So thank you for the advice.

Happy holidays!

You're eating soft foods already? That should usually be like 2-3 weeks post-op and you should be on liquids. Try going back to liquids and see if you get heartburn then. I used to have GERD before WLS but now I don't.

let your surgeon know. Many of us are put on a PPI like omeprazole or Protonix for the first 3-6 months post-surgery.

I was eating purees at day 3 as well. However, I was told 2 oz max at that time (the first few days I didn't get in my 2 oz at my "meal" times). I'd check with your surgeon or nutritionist as what you are eating may be fine, you just might need to do less.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
