What to bring to the hospital?

Recommended Posts

Surgery date is Monday 12/21

I expect 1 night stay and go home on Tuesday

What did you bring with you to the hospital? What do you wish you brought?

Sleeved on 12/9. I brought my phone charger, toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, an extra change of clothes, slippers, and chapstick. I was pretty minimalistic with packing. Wish I would have brought my pillow!!

You won't need much. Don't bring pajamas because you'll be tethered to an IV and heart monitor and won't be able to get your arm into/out of sleeves.

Bring your phone and charger. Comb. Lip balm. Lotion. Toothpaste, toothbrush, and deodorant.

I’ll echo the above recommendations and add soft stretchy leggings to wear under your hospital gown for walks in the halls.

I wear the same thing home that I wore to the hospital. You won’t be in them for very long either day. Your own pillow. You may need it in the car on the way home to hold against your tummy if the roads are bumpy.

And what everyone else said.

So you stayed overnight it wasn’t a day surgery?

I would also recommend Biotene Dry Mouth Spray. It helps coat your mouth so that you don't have such a dry mouth.

I took what I could fit into a fairly small back pack, but also didn't want to leave a laptop in the hotel room while I was away for two to three nights. Surgeon would have been happy for me to stay three nights (he knew I had travelled solo and was staying in a hotel) but I pressed to be let out after two due to possible covid travel restrictions which were being implemented and wanted to return home as soon as possible.

So laptop, tablet (for reading ebooks), pjs (no way was I wearing the hospital gown longer than I had to), socks, undies, no wire bra, facial wipes, lip moisturiser, face moisturiser, tooth brush and paste, pen and paper, sudoku and crossword book . I wore the same clothes out as I wore in.

Phone, charger, and chapstick. You will sleep the whole time, so enjoy it!!! I wore comfy clothes there, changed into hospital gown when I got there, and then wore the same clothes home again the next day!

Best of luck to you!!

I agree with everyone above. Wear something super comfy to the hospital so you can also wear that home. Loose, comfy sweats, a big sweat shirt...nothing that will sit on or touch your incisions. You will be waiting a couple of hours from check in to surgery (at least in my experience) so have a book, a phone or a tablet. After, I set the television on a home improvement channel and just dozed off and on until it was time to go home.

I only used the cellphone, toothpaste, lip balm and mouth spray . My surgery was 7 am and I went home the next afternoon. Wore the same sweat pants and oversized shirt I wore day of surgery.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
