No hunger, difficulty eating and drinking

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I’m about three months post op and I’m struggling to stick to plan. My hunger/thirst seems to still be off and it’s getting harder to make myself drink enough Water and get my Protein in. Plus, I’m getting really bored with my protein options. Texture has been a big deal since surgery and certain Protein Shakes as well as yogurt makes me sick. And when I do want to eat, I want something that is “worth it” taste wise and find it much harder to force down the foods that I’m supposed to be eating. I was doing good on weight loss at the beginning but I’ve stalled and I know it’s because I’m not getting enough water or protein. I’m afraid of staying where I’m at or even gaining if I continue to fail to meet water and protein goals and supplement with foods that are off plan. Is anyone else going through this struggle? Any suggestions for keeping protein interesting? I guess I just need some advice and motivation.

My mom had the same surgery about a year and a half before me and she’s super skinny now. I know I’m not going to get to her level because I started off at a higher weight and all but being this far behind her in the journey has been hard. She keeps encouraging me (tempting me?) to eat foods that are off plan for me right now that she is able to eat. It’s getting harder and harder to say no and it’s like she forgot what it was like to be at this stage. I feel like I’m in this alone.

Sometimes experimenting with new foods that are on plan is the only thing you can do. My hunger came back around month 5, but for some reason it's mostly only in the morning with the rare appearance at night. Very strange lol. And, I live in house where I'm the only one on a special diet and everyone else is eating cakes, pizza, Cookies, donuts, pie, fast food, etc. and it's hard, but you just think about the weight you've lost and the amount you still have left to lose and then it's easy to say "no" or at least it is in my case. It just isn't worth it to go off plan when I'm so close to my goal weight! If you need to then sit your mom down and tell her that she isn't helping you by guiding you to the wrong foods and that you'd really like her support by NOT offering the wrong foods to you, that you love her, but you're trying really hard to keep on plan and you need her to help you out in that.

I agree with talking to your mom about how you feel. It can be frustrating when you feel alone.

I’m a year post VSG today and 4months post VSG to RNY revision and there are days where the struggle with texture are very real. I just do the best I can. I rely pretty heavily on Protein Soups, Protein Bars, and shakes as animal protein doesn’t sit well most of the time. Sometimes I’ll go the plant based protein route with things like impossible burgers or tofu.

Hope you find something that works for you.

Maybe try some different kinds of tasty Soup? I found that pea based Protein Powder was pretty good when added to savory dishes like soup.

It's hard when you compare yourself or your results to someone else. Each person's journey is different and unique. Just try really hard to get the Protein and Water in and do the best you can.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
