Mine is outpatient. Though they do keep some “higher” risk patients overnight if needed. You go early in the morning and then you are there 8-9 hours. Basically you have things you have to meet to go home. Up and walking, potty, tolerating liquids, and in a good place pain wise. I have a high pain tolerance (thankfully) and have had multiple csections and other surgeries. So maybe that’s why my pain tolerance is high? Not sure, but nonetheless you are sent home with pretty good pain meds also.

It depends on the type of surgery you're having. I had the VSG. They had to keep me overnight to test my stomach for leaks before they could let me go

this isn't the first time I've read about this - I think more are being done this way because of COVID. Yesterday I even heard someone say a friend of hers was having a hip replacement outpatient. I'm surprised they can do that since when my mother had both of hers replaced (not at the same time, though!), I think she was in the hospital for about three days and then went off to rehab for 2-3 weeks. Granted, WLS isn't as involved ...and doesn't have as long a recovery time....as a hip replacement, though. But I guess if they can do it....

Although not entirely outpatient, I was sent to the Hampton Inn with a nurse attending about 10 of us overnight. I think I could have gone home (and may have preferred it, frankly!) The nurse came in every four hours and ground up a pain pill in warm Water and I drank it and I was fine. They left at 7AM, and I went to see my surgeon at about 10AM (I had to Uber there!). He said he had done the test the prior day and I was fine and I have been fine. I think staying in the hospital would have been good for the IV drugs, but other than that, I was perfectly fine. I was also their best (least needy) patient.

What surgery is this for? I'm having a bypass and the minimum stay is 2 nights. I haven't heard of day surgery for a bypass before, although I have for the band.

I had RNY on 9/28 and my surgery was outpatient. I’m young-ish and relatively low-risk. Surgery was at 10:30am and I was home at 6pm. If I had to do it all over again, I’d push a lot harder to stay in the hospital at least one night - I was in A LOT more pain post surgery than I anticipated. I had a swallow study and a follow up with the doctor the next morning at 8:30am back at the hospital. I found out a couple weeks later that I was one of the only patients they did as outpatient (basically a test) and that since then they started requiring 1-2 night stays post surgery... which I do feel is/was totally necessary!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
