How long did your doctor tell you to wait to drink after eating? My packet says 90-120 minutes, but it seems most people are told 60 minutes.
By 90-120 I am so thirsty. Just wondering what everyone else has been told.

Mine has a 30-30-30 rule. Stop drinking 30 minutes before eating. Meals should take 30 minutes. Can drink 30 minutes after eating. Every surgeon has different rules though but I do think waiting 90 minutes is too long. I’d be so thirsty.

the first few weeks I was told to wait 30 minutes. Once I moved to solid foods, they said I should wait for 60 minutes. At one point during my first year out, the nutritionist said to try to wait 90 minutes if possible, but 60 was acceptable. So i still do that to this day (usually 90, but at least 60 if 90 isn't possible due to my schedule or whatever...)

I was told 30 minutes. My surgeon told me it takes about 30 minutes for the food to digest so to wait 30 minutes before drinking unless I absolutely have to due to choking (I have EOS which causes dysphagia so I usually have to drink a sip at least once every other day due to that issue)

What is the main reason for waiting? I ask because I have no trouble drinking Water in fairly large quantities & quite quickly, even after eating. I worry about stretching so don't do it & my dietitian said to slow down on the water in general (although surgeon unbothered...they never agree lol)

to keep the food in your stomach for awhile so that you're satisfied - otherwise, it washes out of your pouch or sleeve too quickly, and you get hungry again.

I was told 30 too but I can do less now. If I drink & eat too close together I quickly get a tightness in my chest which tells me to stop eating or drinking & wait longer. Handy warning system for me. 😋

YOU will be the best person to say how long to wait after eating. I was told 30 minutes, but really, this was just a guideline. In time you will be able to figure out how long to wait for yourself. I learned that mine is generally 30 mins to an hour after eating. I can tell from my "fullness" if I should drink now or wait a little bit more. If I drink too soon, I'll feel a very unpleasant pressure in my chest OR barf. It took me a couple months to figure this out.

On the other side of things, my doc told to me wait 30 mins after drinking before I start eating. I found that I can drink liquids right up to eating with no ill effects.

It'll be trial and error...but eventually you'll figure out what works for you if you pay attention (hopefully sooner rather than later!)

Good Luck!

I’ve definitely found if it try to drink in less than 60 minutes after eating it makes me feel a little nauseous and gives me pain in my chest.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
