Michelle Keller 7 Posted December 8, 2020 Hello! My husbands insurance finally added bariatric surgery onto the insurance plan. His work is based in MA so though we are in NC, we have BCBS OF MA. Does anyone know how long of a period I have to go on a weight loss program before I can get approved for gastric bypass? 3 months? 6? The insurance doesn’t start until Jan. 1st or I’d call them and get all the info I could. Thanks in advance!
catwoman7 11,220 Posted December 8, 2020 that's a question for your insurance company - they're all different. They can probably still tell you if you call them, even though your policy doesn't take effect until January. Mine required six months, but it could be any time within the past two years, so I was able to start it before my policy even went into effect - so I got it out of the way before I officially entered the bariatric program. Cherie04 47 Posted December 8, 2020 I have BCBS of MS. There were two different programs, a 3 month or 6 month program. I went with the 3 month program. I started the process in July and my surgery is scheduled for tomorrow. I had to have 4 appointments with my surgeon and 4 appointments with my nutritionist.
