New to this... surgery is on 12/15

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I’m completely new to this app and my surgery date is 12/15.

Currently on the liquid diet. I’ve made my own black bean Soup, puréed and then passed through a sleeve, is this okay to consume right now?

Also I love seltzer (even have a machine for it) and can’t have it anymore. Plain regular Water intake has been difficult. Any tips besides pouring drops in?

Lastly, will I be able to drive myself back home after surgery? I’m spending the night at the hospital but the next day I should be ho to go home.
Thanks in advance.

Are you just staying the one night post-op? I stayed two. They should be okay to let you drive yourself home after an overnight stay because all anesthesia should be out of your system that would impair you from driving. Oh wait, unless you're taking pain meds. You might wanna have a back-up plan.

Is seltzer carbonated? No carbonation after the sleeve. pureed black bean Soup sounds good in theory, but is it high in carbs?

Good luck on your surgery. Let us know how you're doing and I look forward to seeing you in the forum threads.

Hi there,

I am really close to my date also 12/17, and there are somethings you shared in the post that were told to me as "no-no's" First off, you should only be consuming Clear Liquids, (i.e broth, Water, Decaf coffee) and only eat two cups of the following vegetables (see below). You want to ensure that your body stays in a ketosis state so that before you have surgery your liver is at its smallest state (ketosis is a fat burning process) having a smaller liver will make it easier for the surgeon to operate since your stomach is very close to your liver. Secondly, I think that you should definitely arrange for a ride or at least take a taxi/Uber home after surgery, best to be safe. Do you have anyone staying with you after the surgery? I hope you will be okay and understand the professionals recommend this sort of thing because they know what will make it the easiest process for you afterwards (this is not for them) .

Like you, I am finding it hard to be on the liquid diet, and I come from an Italian home...today I ate spinach while they all had plates of homemade Pasta. And when I came home I had 1 cup of chicken broth while my boyfriend ate a bag of perogies.

All this to say I understand how are you feeling and I hope this does not come off as harsh, but you need to follow the guidelines provided for you so that you have the best possible results for you!

food List (only two cups a day)

Spinach, Cucumber, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cucumber, Lettuce, Cabbage, Fat Free J-ello

I wouldn't have been allowed black bean Soup on my liquid diet - but maybe yours is different. I could only have 4-5 Protein Shakes a day, all the no (or nearly no) calorie clear liquids I wanted, sugar free popsicles, sugar free Jello, and a limited amount of Tomato juice/V8 and chicken broth (I think it might have been a cup of each). That's it. But I know surgeons allow their patients to have a small amount of food. Did they tell you what you were allowed to have? My clinic was pretty clear about it...

You should call the hospital and ask them about leaving. I could not leave on my own. I had to uber my son to the hospital to go home.

For the liquid diet I was told broth clear like fluids only w/ 1 small daily meal.

Lastly I turned out to be highly allergic. If possible I recommend asking what they use to clean and patch you up and see if you can get an allergy test prior.

@Gradycat I’m just staying overnight. You’re probably right on driving myself home... I’ll definitely take pain meds.
As for the Soup, I love black beans... I was told I could do it post op but forgot to ask Pre-op.

The fact that it’s high in carbs worries me now. Thanks for the heads up.

@merraculous still trying to learn how to respond on this app or delete post.

My pre-op diet is different than yours. I wasn’t told Clear Liquids, just liquids. I’m drinking 3 Protein Shakes and 3 Snacks. Snacks can be: Greek yogurt, milk, sugar free pudding/jello, ricotta, tea, unlimited: Water, zero Gatorade, Protein Water, crystal lite ‘true lemon’, día drink.
Absolutely no solids and no fruits.

I thought by puréeing the Soup qualifies as a liquid lol.

You’re lucky to get to eat solids (any solids). Right now I would love a spinach or kale salad.
Thanks for the info.
Good luck with your surgery too.

@lorecar I’m not allowed to eat solids. I wish... I could live off one meal a day like normal.

Definitely calling the hospital tomorrow to ask about driving and allergy testing and will be asking friends too.

Our pre-op diets are very similar.
I’ll freeze my black bean yummy Soup.

This is my last week on the pre-op diet before surgery so I’ll try to keep it as clear liquids as possible.

Thanks

All the pre op diets I've seen are different but one thing remains the same, high protein/low carb. Did your dr send a list of approved foods for your to eat pre op?

As for driving home, I doubt it. You will still have drugs in your system. You should get all these details at your pre op, but you can call to ask beforehand. Good luck!!!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
