Energy Level on Pre-Op Diet

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. I’ve been on the diet for five days. It consists of a Protein Shake for Breakfast, 3 oz lean Protein and 1/2 C cottage cheese at lunch and dinner. I’m allowed one vegetable and fruit per day. No caffeine.

The first three days were hell. Not because of the food restrictions but I think because caffeine restriction. On second and third days it took all my effort just to stay awake. On the fourth day the dr said I could have a small coffee each day for the remaining 7 days of the diet as long as I weaned myself off.

Of course that helped. A lot. The next day, day five, I felt very alert. Enough so I had no coffee at all. Today, on day six, the low energy returned. And though better than day two and three, i couldn’t function without so I had half a cup of coffee.

It’s not shocking to me that I am fatigued on this diet, be it from the restricted calories or the caffeine. What surprises me is the pattern and intensity. Has anyone else experienced an alternating day pattern of energy levels? If so was that due to caffeine withdrawal or calorie restriction in your case? Did it improve after surgery?

I’m worried I will not be able to function after surgery when I cannot have any caffeine at all for a minimum of six weeks.

My energy level was like (-) 100. Doc said it was due to calorie restriction. The level increased post-procedure once I started soft foods . I took frequent naps. Now I have a nap addiction, lol.

If u aren't on them already, maybe a B12 supplement could help?

Hot Decaf tea or coffee might perk you up even without the caffeine. Try that.

I had no energy on the pre-op diet, but my energy rebounded post-op. Also, my surgeon allowed caffeine at my two week f/u to help with Constipation. I have been happily consuming daily caffeine since then. I also take the B12 and my energy is great...until about 9 pm when I can’t keep my eyes open. 😂

Good luck! 💕

Caffeine was tough for me. The headaches are real. I'm in my third week post and don't even want it anymore. I'm pretty shocked. I have good energy and am just concentrating on Protein and hydration. Try to embrace the changes. Keep your eye on the prize. Good luck!

Lucky. I cannot have it for 6 weeks. Hopefully this was more a result of calorie restriction. The more days go by the more energy I have. Still at about 50%.

Thanks! Yesterday after breakfast I was not even hungry the whole rest of the day, though I made myself eat some cottage cheese and broccoli for dinner. I am trying to discern between the head hunger, which I have frequently, and true hunger. Didnt have the true hunger yesterday.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
