I am scheduled to be sleeved on December 18th. The last time I saw my surgeon was on November 2nd and he told me by the time I saw him on November 30th that I needed to lose 20 pounds and yesterday when I got on his scale I had gained 5 pounds. I had cleared all the sugar out of my house but my Calorie intake was way too much even though I was eating things that were better for me. My searching was going to cancel my surgery and I have a meltdown he told me I have to come to his office and weigh-in on the 17th in if I can lose 20 pounds he'll do my surgery if not he'll cancel it. I can't afford to screw this up my life is riding on this.

That's gonna be tough to lose 20 lbs in 17 days, you know that, right? That's a lot of pressure to put on yourself. I'm supportive and encouraging of your desire to have the WLS, but could you possibly postpone it until Spring to give you a better opportunity to lose the weight so that you aren't under so much constraint during the holidays and during COVID and everything?

I lost a lot of weight prior to surgery following a diet similar to this:
Unsweetened almond milk latte for breakfast
One string cheese as a snack
Premier Protein for lunch
High protein/low calorie dinner like eggs and a vegetarian sausage

It sucks but it’s effective!

You could probably lose close to 20 pounds in time for surgery with a liquid diet. However, the bigger issue is whether you are ready for the dramatic lifestyle changes that are needed after surgery.

It might not be a bad idea to postpone your surgery and meet with a therapist and perhaps a nutritionist to better understand what triggers your eating and how you can better manage it. That would set you up for success once you do have surgery.

The pre-op diet is really the best way to lose weight fast. I lost 15 or 16 pounds on the pre-op diet.

I agree with the other commenters. Go full liquid now. My wife and I both lost 17lbs by doing the full liquid diet for 2 weeks (3-4 Protein Shakes a day). Make sure to get 64oz+ of Water a day as well as that helps to flush the kidneys and excess water weight. The other key is to make sure you get enough electrolytes. Soup broths, sugar free popsicles, sugar free Jello and flavored waters were our go to to really drop weight fast. We maintained about 500 calories a day and this helped us after surgery to lose weight fast as well.

20 lbs in 3 weeks can be done, if you are just starting out, but would def be on the challenging side. If you are at a higher starting weight, it will be "easier" than if you are at a lower starting weight. What is your height/weight?

If you go all liquid (low cal, low carb shakes, for instance) you would be able to drop quite a bit...it will mostly be Water weight, but a pound is a pound is a pound, I guess.

Though I suspect your doc is just looking to see you display some evidence of self-control and commitment to the process as he is still only asking you to lose 20lbs vs 25lbs (the original 20 + the 5 that you gained).

If your goal is to lose 20 lbs, try to put in an honest effort to drop your daily calories NOW. I'd normally say move/exercise more, but this may make you hungrier, plus weight loss is more about food intake than exercise level anyway, so just keep it simple for now.

Good Luck!

P.S. I lost 11.8 lbs in the 2 wk pre-op diet. I am 5'2" and was 235 lbs at the time. If you are taller/bigger, your numbers will likely lean higher.

Aah you fell into the ‘I’m making healthier food choices but I haven’t lost weight’ trap. A lot of us have. It’s portion size that often trips us up. We make the good choices & choose grilled over fried, add more vegetables, etc. but our plate is still full. It’s just another thing we have to learn on weight loss journey.

Full liquids seems to be your best option at this point. Have a chat with your nutritionalist first to help you through these couple of weeks. If your surgeon still does decide to delay your surgery, don’t give up. It will happen for you. Through this journey, you’ll probably have a few slips, trips & challenges. This is just your first. Just pick yourself up, regain your focus & move forward.

Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
