Is severe pain normal five days post op?

So I had my surgery on Tuesday. After vomiting blood the whole night, I was discharged the next day. I was given the same pain reliever I already take daily for my back but in liquid form (Vicodin). The pain for the next few days was pretty bad, but manageable. I also started having serious vaginal blood loss even though I had a monthly cycle before surgery. The pain has just gotten worse and I can hardly move now. My doctor have me a generic response of: “go to the emergency room for pain” (I guess I must have been blessed with really good doctors previously because they would address the problems over the phone) but I’m wondering, did anyone go through severe pain that you couldn’t walk and it hurt to move your abdomen the first week?

No, I didn't experience any pain at all. This doesn't sound right. Why won't your surgeon see you? Maybe you really should go to the Emergency Room. I'm so sorry you're going through this.

I don’t know why he won’t. The whole operation and care afterward was very sketchy. If anyone here is in Florida, I would stay far away from the Cleaveland Clinic. They want me to go to their emergency room, but it’s over half an hour away so I’ll have to go to my local one. I’m really trying to hold on because corona and emergency rooms here don’t mix. They keep sick patients next to non sick ones 😫 thank you for your response

I had a similar experience. The Norco I was prescribed did not handle my pain and I had to go back to my surgeon. Like you, I take pain medication daily anyway, for unrelated conditions. So I probably had a certain amount of tolerance built up and taking the same med after surgery just wasn't sufficient. Oxycodone did the trick, however. And after about two weeks the pain eased up. I agree you should go to the ER to rule out any kind of severe complication. If they say you're okay, you may need a different med from the one you take daily, or a higher dose. Sorry you're going through this, I hope it gets resolved quickly. I remember what that pain was like and it was really tough to deal with. Hang in there.🤗

I am so sorry to hear you are having so many pains. I am surprised they released you from the hospital. I would say call your doctor IMMEDIATELY and get to an emergency room.

I had my surgery 11/11 and was up and walking around that same night, no pain medication was needed. The most discomfort was from the incision feeling like I had been stabbed. And occasionally feeling like parts of my insides were moving around in my stomach.

Pain should decrease not increases over time. If the Dr says go to the ER, it's probably best to go to the ER. Perhaps there isn't much they can do over the phone because of the state of things but the ER can perform diagnostic testing quicker than if you wait for a regular appointment

Hi Jokersgirl, I am waiting on my surgery date this week, so I haven't actually had my bypass yet. However, I believe Id wait on going to the ER where you had your surgery done. It is better safe then sorry. Please keep us posted, and best of luck.
