Anyone have chest pain after drinking?

Recommended Posts

Hello all newbie here I had my vsg surgery in TJ Mexico on 11/16 since it was not covered under my insurance. I have since then continuously been having pain in my chest after drinking or eating Jello and I am starting to get concerned. Sometimes it happens even when I am not eating or drinking. Has anyone else experienced this? Please share your experiences ❤️

Sorry you tell dealing with this! It can be so scary!!! I get burps that are “stuck” in my chest (I don’t know any other way to describe them). It’s usually when I drink too fast, but it happened a lot more severely and often during my first three weeks. It hurt in the beginning, now it is just a sign that I recognize. I tap my sternum firmly with a closed fist and it often helps them get unstuck. Drinking has always been hard for me - 64 oz is insane to me. I maybe hit it 2x/week! Another thing the nurse told me in the hospital is that the doctor has to move your diaphragm to do the surgery, so a good amount of chest pain and breathlessness comes form that early on. Does it improve if you take Tylenol? They make dissolve packs now (get them at Target) if you are nervous about swallowing pills. If you are still concerned, you should contact your care team or primary doctor. Hope it all works out!

I get really bad chest pain when I drink too soon after eating. Sometimes a half hour is not enough time. Also, ice Water can cause pain. It does pass eventually. I attribute some of the pain to having had a hiatal hernia repair at the same time as the VSG.

This, and how. Exactly with the little burps and hitting the sternum. I'm 3 months post-op. I just accidentally had to buy a propel Water on a trip and found the bottles it comes in to make things much easier for me, maybe the nozzle slowing it down while I drink. I do get in my 64 oz but I used to drink 96 oz easily daily and it was no problem. Now, however, I really have to stop myself from drinking too fast.

With me, times are different too. I don't know if it's because I move around more and exercise first but morning is the worst for me until mid to late afternoon. Then it seems easier to just keep drinking in small amounts. It can take me hours to drink my 16 oz and major chest pain, no matter how slow I go, until past 3 or so, then I can take the same in about 45 minutes.

Cold, or ice cold, seems to do better for me with drinking but Keto ice cream or ice cream gives me amazing pain for about a half hour after even if I melt it down. If I freeze my water, it goes down easier but this really varies per person.

Don't stress yourself too much with this-things do even out more as you go.

I'll get it if I drink something carbonated or drink something too cold. Most things have to be at least room temperature for me now post WLS.

Oh God, yes! I had this for the first month or maybe even six weeks. It was really painful and even swallowing my own saliva (or just air) could cause it. Fortunately, it faded away over time. Hang in there, it gets better. 🤗

Oh my goodness! I just realized that cold may be an issue for me - lightbulb!!! Lol thanks for posting this. I drink so much faster with warm liquids.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
