RNY because of GERD, not weight loss?

Recommended Posts

I’m scheduled for bypass in a week. It’s a revision from a sleeve. I’m having bile reflux and that’s the primary reason I’m doing the surgery. I’ve had some pretty mixed feelings about it, but logically it is the best choice.

I went into this from the beginning for Roux-en-Y only to correct my reflux. Talk about some mixed emotions!!! I understand. I felt like I was being punished in order to cure my absolutely severe acid issue. But I couldn’t keep sleeping upright in a chair my whole life, am I esophagus already had erosion despite medicine! 😯 Tomorrow is 5 weeks post op. I have not had heartburn in five weeks and it almost seems like a dream. On top of that from starting my Meal Replacement two weeks before surgery until now I’ve lost 40 pounds. This past week my own daughter and boyfriend didn’t recognize me from a distance across the parking lot... So the weight loss is a win-win 😃

Hi all! I had RNY on 11/18/2019. I had GERD and Gastroparesis plus other issues. I have been on acid reducing agents for so long.. My GERD did get better. However I keep getting break through GERD and nothing is helping. I have a choking burning sensation constantly in the back of my throat. A metallic taste that never goes away and my stomach hurts, it feels bloated. I am trying to get most of my "food" from protien drinks to see if that helps cuz eating food makes it worse. I am constipated so bad. :(. I am suppose to be scheduled for an upper GI but still waiting on the dr. office to schedule it. IDK.. my taste is weird/off too. I can eat a few bites of something sweet and then i can't taste it(flavorless). I notice though it is different with salty things. Anyone experience any of this? Thank you!

I have a lower BMI and should have had sleeve if I didn't have GERD. I take medicine for it and still have issues daily. I am self pay. Where you are having surgery was my 1st choice for quite awhile and if it didn't work at where I was going (closer to home) I would be going there. I had hoped to have surgery last fall and my oldest could have gone with but it didn't work out that way. I am having surgery in 3 weeks.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
