RNY because of GERD, not weight loss?

Recommended Posts

I had mine because of GERD, esophagus strictures, barrets esophagus and needing a 3rd hernia repair. Weight loss was just a bonus. I’m 4 days post op.

I'm five days post op. How are you doing? I'm really having a hard time keeping hydrated and up with Protein.

Hi AmandaQB I’m having the same challenges. This weekend I had to revert back to ice because I was so nauseous after I drank anything. It started when my Protein started. I’m going to slowly sip some protein today but it’s going to be so hard to get it all in. Is it hard for you to get it all in or is it the nausea?

Oh boy, that is no good. Did you get anti-nausea medications prescribed to you? I have Zofran, and have had to use it for the past three days. My nausea seems to happen around early afternoon, usually while drinking fluids, not protein. It's like my pouch is too full and I get a dry cough that turns to nausea. Really weird.

It's just hard for me to get it all in. I just can't get even close to the 48oz of Fluid and 60-80g protein. I've got timers going to remind me and everything. :(

it’s the same for me! Zofran is r working as well so my doctor ordered me a few more Patches that worked really well last time. Since we’re so close in our journey maybe we can exchange numbers to text each other!

Hi AmandaQB i'm feeling much better today. I had to go back to the hospital to get fluids. I'm also on full fluids this phase. I'm trying to make sure to get them all in because I don't ever want to have that feeling again. I'm glad your day went well. Are you on full liquids yet?

Had a revision & second hiatal hernia repair done per GERD so bad damaging vocal chords and cancer risk. 10 weeks post op and very happy with results! No GERD , can eat things I wasn’t able to before . liquid goes down easier than it did with sleeve and I am losing more weight and am now closer to goal weight (8lbs to go) which I never was with sleeve. No complications. No more GERD or acid reflux, so happy and feeling 10xs better!

I had RNY 12/9, inspired by GERD. I know “inspired” is an odd choice of words, but that is truly what brought me to this process. It’s only 10 days post-op but I feel so good!

Hi everyone!
Brand new to the forums here. I am gearing up for my December 15, Roux-en Y surgery at Stanford Medical. I know that a majority of patients get the RNY for weight loss. I've been having a hard time finding people who have the surgery to purely address GERD/Acid Reflux. Is there a thread here specifically for this? I'd love to find some people going through the same thing so I can be supportive as well. [emoji7]

Hello I had the Roux-en Y surgery on March 15, 2017 and feel bloated after I eat

Hi my name is Alexandra,

I had Gastric Bypass Surgery on 11/18/2018 due to GIRDS which caused Barrett's Esophagus. I started this road back in 2017 after many years of having food becoming stuck in my damaged swollen esophagus. It would just stop moving down and with each bite would back up further and further up my throat until I was in so much pain and had to stop eating and wait for 20 - 30 minutes until the food at the bottom would finally slide into my stomach. The pain as that food sat there stretching my already swollen damaged and inflamed esophagus was intense. The GIRDS that had gone on undetected for years had caused my esophagus lining to wallpaper itself with intestinal cells as to protect itself from the stomach acid, this is called Barrett's Esophagus. They told me that if it continued to do so I would end up with cancer. So I went ahead and had the surgery, and at that time I weighed 222 and at 5'7" which was right on the borderline of being able to qualify for surgery under my health insurance guidelines. Today I struggle to keep my weight at 127 and belch constantly after eating, for 15 to 20 minutes, and I mean constantly like every 4 to 5 seconds. Food still gets stuck in my esophagus on occasion but it is usually due to eating too fast and not chewing my bites enough. Sugar is another thing that causes me a great deal of pain with the dreaded "dumping syndrome" and I constantly have diarrhea everyday but I have had that for over 10 years. That started with a bad case of giardia that sent me to the ER and even though I have been tested for giardia many times since then the diarrhea is a constant in my life and makes it very difficult to go to work. But I'm happy to be able to tell you that my esophagus has returned to normal cells that make up the lining so no more threat of cancer at this point. Three weeks after my Roux-en-Y surgery my gallbladder was functioning at 10% so back to surgery I went and with one surgery after another so close together the road to recovery was long. But that is my long story to answer your question about GIRDS

Hi, I am on the same road. Gerd with Barrett’s Esopighus condition. Belching and acid reflux are common. I also have Hypothyroid. Got my Gastric Sleeve done in 2017 along with fixing of Hiatal Hernia. I was well for a year and half and then everything returned. I gained all my weight back, belching and gastric attacks became an everyday occurance. Went in for 2nd Hernia repair in 2019. My surgeon said he stitched my Esophegus to small size as it had grown too big/wide. That did not help at all. Early this year I had COVID and the side effect is getting out of breath too soon. Shortness of breath along with a gastric/belching attack, this was making my life hell and my insurance suggested that I go for Gastric Bypass. After weighing the pro/cons and consulting 3 surgeons, I went ahead and had my Gastric Bypass done on 12/23/2020. I am 10 days out of surgery, and don’t have trouble keeping liquids down. I am at 45-48ozs of liquid a day only. Do get nausea without eating/drinking anything. Zofron really helps. I have lost only 6lbs of weight in 10 days. Is it normal. Would appreciate any and all support. Thank you all.

Hello. I am new to this app. I am having surgery on 1/15. I had lost over 150 pounds. But last year I had a hernia and since then my stomach has not digested properly. The doctor diagnosed gastric paresis. Makes little since to me since that is associated with blood sugar issues and my blood sugar has been normal and well controlled for years. At any rate, the surgeon advised to correct the issue would be a bypass surgery. I have done my research and completed the requirements. So here I am a week or so away from the surgery. I would love to connect with others for support and questions. Just reading your post this far has really encouraged me to know that I am not alone.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
