Weight loss post op

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on October 28th. I have lost 9 lbs. is that typical? I guess I’m being impatient and expected weight to drop off quickly. I am having trouble meeting a daily calorie goal. Any suggestions, would be very helpful!

Typical for who and there personal circumsances? Hasn't been two weeks yet so I would say 9lb is pretty good. Reset your expectations.

First few weeks are a bit skewed...there is surgery weight (as in IV fluids and inflammation), weight loss from pre op diet (and if a lot lost then don't expect to lose a lot in the first few weeks post op), body getting use to the various post op food stages, surgery day weight, gender, incidental activity levels, hydration/dehydration levels.

If you are going to stick around, it would be helpful if you filled in your profile, weight, height etc, it gives context to any questions and helps frame responses.

It is difficult at this stage to meet goals, a calorie goal is probably even more difficult. Focus on Water, Protein (very helpful for healing/recovery from surgery as well as helping feel satisfied), volumes etc.

What calorie goal has been set for you at this stage of your post op progress?

I lost 16 lbs the first MONTH, and I started off at over 300 lbs. Rate of weight loss depends on so many factors - starting BMI, whether or not you lost weight before your surgery, age, sex, metabolic rate, activity level. It seems most people lose in the 15-25 lb range the first month (although there will always be outliers), so you'll probably end up in that range, too..

I lost 15 pounds in the first month, so I'd say 9 pounds in under two weeks is good. You're off to a good start!

9 pounds in less than two weeks is good. I lost 10 pounds in the first two weeks so I was about the same and I was well over 300 pounds. Trust me, you're doing good! But, try not to set unrealistic expectations. It's not healthy to expect to drop 30+ pounds every month. Some months you'll lose less than others. The first six months you'll lose the most, but your weight loss WILL slow down. I'm 9 months out. Last month I lost 4 pounds, but this month we're only 9 days in and I've already lost 5 pounds. And stalls WILL happen! You can't avoid them. But when they happen I just look at my weight loss since surgery and it stresses me out less. I've lost 109 pounds since my surgery. I'm probably losing slower than most due to thyroid issues and not being able to exercise like a normal person, but it's still coming off even if it's slow. Try not to stress through your first stall when it happens. It'll pass.

Sounds good to me! I GAINED 7lb from my hospital stay (I was in for a few days with complications). I have lost it now, and finally down again by a couple pounds (I am a week post op).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
