For those post op...how are you doing with Protein?

my goal is 60, I just started purées yesterday but today I got 20. That was pushing it. The nutritionist at my doctor said to try to eat my tiny meal every 3 hours. I made some refried Beans purée with extra unflavored protein, Ricotta bake. I tried an egg today but didn’t sit well after only 1/4 of it. I can only manage about 1-1.5 ounce of whatever.

I got sleeved on the 21st and hiatal hernia repaired as well. I believe this was the worst pain I ever felt in my entire life right after coming out the operation room. Thank God! I slept through the night, and my nurses were giving me good care at the hospital. Gas pain wasn’t tough like I see lots of people have been complaining about. Walking, walking non stop at the hospital is live saver. I wish anyone who’s gonna go for weight loss surgery best of luck. Remember! Always follow your surgeon and primary doctor instructions.

I am scheduled for tomorrow morning 8am CST, I am having both done as well. (VSG and Hiatal hernia) What exactly was the pain you experienced? And mine is outpatient so I will be going home same day. 😞

Amy_Aim yes darling! My pain was super sharp as soon as I came out out the operation room. At one point I peed myself cause I couldn’t get up and go to the bathroom by myself. I don’t want you to be scared cause this was mine, and yours might be different from what I felt. Say a prayer, meditate and relax. Best of luck

I’m awake! Alive! I’ve peed a ton. The breathing tube test thing is my mortal enemy because the excess gas won’t let me breathe! So much burping! I’ll update more when I get home!

I’m home! So One major thing I found, is that I brought a lot of stuff with me that I didn’t even use. I brought my Nintendo Switch, journals, an adult coloring book...they all stayed in my tote. After the surgery I was out until about 5:30pm. At that time I was in and out of sleep until almost midnight. Finally I came to enough to be aware of the shoulder pain, left side. Then they gave me that tube you blow in. Which the right shoulder pain made it impossible to do. I can do it now but I still have a bit of abdominal pains.

If you have long hair, braid it so it’s easier to stick into the cap for the OR.

Don’t take anything more than a phone charger with a long cord if you will only be in for 24 or so hours (I was released after 29 hours of being there (from arrival before the appointment until I got discharged). My hospital had a lot of good movies on their TV program, and they also have cable television. The little time I did spend in my room, I put it on a movie or TV program while I “ate” and then once I was done eating I’d go for a walk around the floor. Anyway, I took a lot of stuff and I didn’t even use it. Not even my chapstick or nail clippers.

If you take meds that the hospital won’t have for your stay, take the prescription bottle filled with only the amount of pills you will need that day. Since my hospital was a heart and surgical hospital, they weren’t going to have my OCD meds, so I brought the bottle with two pills in each only.

If I think of anything else useful, I’ll let you guys know! Just don’t take a ton of stuff, because you’ll have to carry it back out with you. If it’s not essential, just don’t bring it.

And someone recommended a pillow for the car ride—smart recommendation! We live across town from where the hospital is, and hit a lot of bumps in the road on the way home. So I had to hug that pillow tight.

Ask for an extra pillow in your room, too! You might hug it when you have to cough, sneeze, etc. it will help! I didn’t have a sore throat from being intubated but I did get the excessive phlegm.

Oh my goodness! I can't believe that you had Gastric bypass and they sent you home the same day. I am having surgery on the 12th and was told I'd be there at least 2 nights. I have seen a couple of posts where ppl said they came home the same day with gastric bypass. I'm sure every dr is different? Keep us posted please, and take really good care of yourself.

RTL, I am having one hell of a time getting in Protein. If I push it I can get 64 oz of Water but I’ve only managed two small glasses of milk for protein today. It’s hard! At least I can take normalish drinks of water now and it doesn’t kill me. Tomorrow is my puree stage.

Hi friend! They sent me home 29 hours after my arrival, so it wasn’t same day!

I’m doing pretty good! I just get some nausea when I try to consume anything that isn’t straight Water. So the last 2 times I ate, I needed anti nausea pills. Other than that, pain is being controlled by Tylenol.

This makes me feel so much better lol. Like I’m trying but man it’s so hard. I’m glad to see so many said don’t fret about it at this stage. Today I got in 55, I drank one 30g shake inbetween my “meals” and two 6 oz glasses of fairlife milk. So that really is what got me so close. I feel like I’ve just had too much though. I don’t know it’s not that I had to much in one sitting I just feel bloated and icky.

Mine was outpatient. I was there about 6.5 hours total. They did have criteria you needed to meet to go home. You had to be up and walking, go tinkle, and have your pain under control. I was glad to go home the same day. It was at a surgical center, they do have overnight if you would need to stay for any reason but I did fine and was glad to come home!

Try combining the two...Protein2o water was a godsend my first week.

That is great. Sounds like you are doing wonderful, and no pain meds at that. Well, other then Tylenol. I'm so happy for you, but yeah I'd keep taking that med for the nausea as long as needed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
